Despite another slow start, Grundy rallied for a big win Friday night downing Grace Baptist 54-14. The Jackets fell behind 14-0 before notching 54 unanswered points for their first win of the season. Grundy is now 1-1 on the season.

“They came out throwing a little more than we expected. We in fact thought they would go back to their old I-formation because they struggled so much with it last week. Reeling off 54 straight points, that’s the key right there. It was a good job by our kids coming together. It was also a good job of Justin and Coach Evans adjusting on defense and getting our DBs in the right places. They did a great job.

It was good getting in the young kids. Love being able to get everybody in getting reps. That’s what I told them at half was to put their foot on the gas pedal and roll through them and make sure to get everybody in the game and to be leaders,” said Coach Nick Bryant.

Grundy spotted Grace two scores giving up an 18-yard run and a 30-yard pass for TDs. With the extra points, the Jackets were down 14-0 with 6:48 left in the first quarter. They would respond with two scores of their own in the quarter to tie it up and then run away with the contest.

In order, James McDaniel scored on a 7-yard run and the kick failed. Logan Meeks raced in from 25 yards out and then caught the two-point pass. In the second quarter, Trent Hampton caught a 39-yard Houston Mainord pass and the kick failed. McDaniel then exploded for a 53 yard run for score and ran in the two points. He followed that up with a 39 TD run and Kevin Stewart added the kick. Then Logan Meeks returned a 55 yard pass interception and Stewart added the kick.

In the third quarter, Alex Nunley scored from four yards out and the kick failed. Trey Hampton got the last touchdown on a 35-yard pass from Mainord and the kick failed making the final 54-14.

Grundy rolled up 488 yards of offense with 354 coming on the ground. Their defense gave up 290 yards.

Logan Meeks led Grundy’s offense with 9 rushes for 151 yards and a touchdown and 3 receptions for 60 yards. James McDaniel carried the ball 6 times for 142 yards and 3 TDs. Houston Mainord completed 5 of 10 passes for 134 yards and 2 scores. Trent Hampton caught a 39-yard touchdown pass and Trey Hampton caught one for 35 yards. Alex Nunley rushed 3 times for 26 yards and a TD. Greg McDaniel rushed twice for 20 yards.

Terrince Bramhall led the defense with 12 solo tackles, 4 for a loss, an assist, a forced fumble and a pass broken up. Dewayne Grooms followed with 9 solos, one for a loss and 2 assists. Gregory McDaniel notched 7 solos and 2 assists. Trey Hampton made 4 tackles and had an interception return for 22 yards. Kevin Castro and Eldon Posey also made 4 tackles each. Logan Meeks, Alex Nunley and Steven Baskin made three tackles each with Meeks scoring on a 55-yard interception return.

Grundy hosts Sequatchie County Friday for a 7:00 kickoff. The Indians are 1-0 on the season after taking last week off. They defeated Community High 53-7 August 22. Coach Bryant is 1-4 against the Indians in his tenure. Both teams will be looking to get an all-important district win as this is the first game for both.

The Jackets will need a large and loud crowd for sure this one. Everyone really needs to….GET OUT TO THE GAME!
