The Grundy hoopsters continue to search for a rhythm. The Jacket men might have found a little of that Friday night notching a big district win over rival Sequatchie County. They lost at Notre Dame earlier in the week. The Lady Jackets dropped both games.

The Lady Jackets fell to 5-9 on the season and 1-3 in the district. The men moved to 2-11 and 1-3 in the district.

“We go crazy at the end and shoot shots when we don’t need to shoot them. We’ll be up and we’ll take crazy shots when it’s time to kill the clock. That’s hurt us both games. We’ve missed way too many layups both games. We’ve missed enough layups both games that we could of won.             They’re working really hard. Their hustle and effort is there. We’re just making too many mistakes. We’re not playing smart towards the end and we’re missing shots,” said Lady Jacket Coach Julie Davis.

Grundy hosted Signal Mountain Tuesday for another district matchup. The teams will be off until December 26, when they begin play in the South Pittsburg Christmas tournament. Get out and support Grundy basketball!

Girls

Notre Dame 36 – Grundy 32

The Lady Jackets led 8-6 after one but couldn’t hold off the Lady Irish. It was tight the rest of the way with Notre Dame leading by two at the half and five after three. An 11-11 final quarter gave the Lady Irish the district victory.

MiKayla Williams led Grundy with 11 points including two threes. Madison Burrows followed with seven. Teah Bosio had six with a three. Kelsey Arbuckle and Hannah Phillips scored four points each.

Sequatchie Co. 41 – Grundy 38

It was a typical Grundy-Sequatchie battle going down to the wire. Sequatchie led 9-6 after one but the Lady Jackets went up 23-21 at the half. The Lady Indians regained the lead with a 10-4 third quarter. Again, Grundy couldn’t seal the deal at the end even though they held the lead in the fourth.

Teah Bosio topped the Lady Jackets with 14 points including three three-pointers. Kelsey Arbuckle scored seven. MiKayla Williams had four with a three. Hannah Phillips also scored four. Madison Burrows and Haylee Northcutt both hit three pointers. Lacy Nunley scored two and Peyton Eads added one.

Boys

Notre Dame 74 – Grundy 51

Grundy started way too slow and got into a hole 13-4 by the end of the first quarter. They gave up seven more points by half and went to the break, down 33-17. They played a better second half but just couldn’t overcome the Irish lead.

“We played a poor first quarter and it got us behind early. We were climbing a steep hill the rest of the way. We actually played decent basketball the rest of the game, we just got behind so bad in the first that it was just a hard hill to climb back. They’re fast and they’re aggressive and we had too many turnovers. But it’s things I feel like we improved on Wednesday and Thursday,” said Coach Justin Bryant.

Tanner Smartt topped the Jackets with 11. Trey Hampton followed with 10 points. Trevor Hampton had nine. Trent Hampton notched eight with two threes. Boo Goins scored seven with a three. Terrince Bramhall and Jacob Martin scored three points each.

Grundy 46 – Sequatchie Co. 35

The Jackets took charge early with a 16-7 first quarter. The Indians tried to get back in it and cut the lead to 23-19 by the half. Determined to down their arch rival and notch the district win Grundy won the second half 23-16.

“We came ready to play tonight. It’s Sequatchie County. I don’t know what it does to our guys but they play a little harder. I told them after the game we have to bring that type of intensity no matter who we play. We played super hard. We had players step up. We had a freshman lead us in scoring with 19 tonight and five threes. It was a huge game from him. We had our seniors in Tanner Smartt, Terrince Bramhall and Trevor Hampton that just pushed us and willed us to the win. I don’t that they’d have it any other way. I appreciate them and the leadership they bring to this team. It was a huge win for our program and huge for these guys.

Trey Hampton led the way with 19 points with five threes. Tanner Smartt and Boo Goins had eight each with Goins hitting two threes. Trevor Hampton and Terrince Bramhall scored four each. Jacob Martin hit one three pointer.
