Jacket hoop teams get season sweep of Indians

The Grundy County Lady Yellow Jackets and Yellow Jacket basketball teams made it a clean sweep of their regular season games against their District 7 AA rivals from Sequatchie County last Friday night, at GCHS. The Lady Jackets held off the Lady Indians for a 63 – 57 victory, while the Jackets raced past the Indians with a 68 – 35 pounding of their district rivals.
The Lady Jackets ended a three game slide with the victory and evened their overall record at 6 – 6 and their District 7 AA record at 2 – 2. The Jackets won for the second time in a row and improved their overall record to 7 – 6. More importantly, the Jackets are 4 – 0 in district play.
The teams hit the road for three straight games. The Lady Jackets and Jackets traveled to Jasper, Tuesday night, for their rematch with the Lady Warriors and Warriors. Tonight (Thursday), the teams travel to Spencer, to battle Van Buren County with the girls’ game tipping off at 6 p.m. Tomorrow night (Friday,) the teams travel to Crossville to battle Cumberland County. The girls’ game once again, will tip off at 6 p.m.
The Jackets and Jets could be a battle of unbeaten boys’ teams in District 7 AA pending the outcome of Tuesday’s results. The teams will return home Tuesday night, of next week, when they play host to Richard Hardy Memorial School, with the girls’ game tipping off at 6 p.m.
Lady Jackets 63 SCHS 57
The Lady Jackets were able to hold off their rivals for the second time this year with timely free throws down the stretch to win 63 – 57. Sophomore Jordan McCullough was 4 of 6 from the charity stripe, while seniors Ragan Meeks (3 – 4), Kristen Stiefel (3 – 4), and Kiera Hobbs (2 – 2) combined to go 8 of 10 to secure the victory.
McCullough led the Lady Jackets in scoring with 12 points. Fellow sophomore Abby Childers added 11 points and Meeks scored 10 points. The Lady Jackets were 20 – 34 from the free throw line. Meeks and senior Emma Seagroves each made a three point goal.

The Jackets won a four point game at Dunlap in December and the first half looked to be another nail biter as the Jackets clung to a 28 – 23 lead at intermission. The second half and most particularly the third quarter changed the atmosphere dramatically. The Jackets behind a trio of juniors, Jaden Ruehling (7 points), Jordan Hackworth (7 points), and Thaddaeus Blackburn (six points), along with senior Chris Nance (5 points) combined for 25 points during a 28 – 7 blitz by the hosts to put the game all but away. The fourth quarter was a formality as the damage had been done.
Ruehling led the Jackets in scoring with 18 points. Hackworth and Blackburn scored 16 and 10 points, respectively. The Jackets nailed 10 three point shots led by Hackworth’s four goals behind the arc. Blackburn with two, along with Ruehling, Will Jackson, Eli Tipton, and Nance making one shot from beyond the arc. The team was 8 – 14 from the charity stripe.
