Jacket Baseball Sweeps Jets in District 7AA Action

The Grundy County Yellow Jacket baseball team got back on the winning track in a big way last week sweeping the Cumberland County Jets in District 7 AA action. The Jackets won 9 – 4 last Tuesday night at home and went to Crossville on Wednesday to play the Jets in a game that was postponed on Monday night due to inclement weather and won a 10 – 3 nine inning decision. The Jackets traveled to Community on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Community baseball tournament and defeated Richland 9 – 4 on Friday and defeated Culleoka 11 – 6 on Saturday. Their final game ended due to inclement weather without reaching the five innings or time limit to make it an official game.
The Jackets were set to play a district series with Bledsoe County on Monday and Tuesday. They played at home on Monday and away on Tuesday. The Jackets are hosting Cannon County today (Thursday) at 5 p.m. They travel to Cleveland to play the Blue Raiders at 1 p.m. (CDT), on Saturday. Next Monday, they will host Marion County in district play at 5:30 p.m., and will travel to Jasper to play the Warriors on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
The Jackets are 8 – 3 on the season overall and 2 – 0 in district play.
Jackets 9 CCHS 4
The Jackets scored all their runs in the first three innings including five in the second inning. Senior first baseman Kenzie Hill went 3 – 4 including a double and drove home three runs. Sophomore Alex Killian went 2 – 2, scored three runs and drove home three more to lead the offensive charge. Jaden Ruehling added two hits and scored three runs. Killian pitched five and one third innings for the win, giving up four runs, two earned. Fellow sophomore Jarom Huntley pitched the final one and two thirds innings to close out the win.
Jackets 10 CCHS 3 (9 innings)
The Jackets led 3 – 1 going to the sixth inning when the Jets rallied for two runs to tie the game at 3 – 3. The Jackets finally got their offense going in the ninth inning. Senior center fielder Ethan Chouinard got things started by reaching base by being hit by a pitch. After a ground out the next eight Jacket batters reached base with six hits and two bases on balls that produced the seven runs. The Jackets pounded out 17 hits led by Kenzie Hill, Bailey Hill, and Ruehling with three each. Killian, Chouinard, Huntley, and Austin Thomas had two hits each. Junior hurler Jayden Marcom pitched five plus innings, giving up the three runs. Sophomore Dalyn Pickett pitched three scoreless innings, while Kenzie Hill pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the victory.
Jackets 9 Richland 4
The Jackets won their third game in a row with a five inning time limit over the Richland Raiders 9 – 4. The Jackets scored a run in the second inning and added eight runs in the fourth inning to lead 9 – 0. The Raiders scored four runs in the top of the fifth to make the final score 9 – 4. Jaden Ruehling went 2 – 3, driving in three runs, and scoring another run. Killian, Chouinard, Huntley, and Jaden Nance added hits. Ruehling had a triple. Huntley, Marcom, and Nance scored two runs each. Chouinard went the distance on the hill giving up five hits and striking out five as well.
Jackets 11 Culleoka 6
The Jackets wasted little time putting six runs on the board in the top of the first inning on their way to their fourth consecutive win. They added two runs in the third and the fifth innings and a single run in the fourth to hold off the Warriors. Ruehling, Chouinard, and senior DH Steven Yates scored two runs each in the win. Ruehling had three hits including a triple, while senior left fielder Jaden Nance had a double and two rbis. Chouinard also had two rbis. Huntley threw three innings while sophomore Braxton Norris saw his first action on the mound closing the time limit game out with two innings pitched.
