honoring the fallen 1Local residents mourned with Chattanooga last Thursday as news spread of shootings in our neighboring city. We soon learned that Mohammad Abdulazeez, in an act of what is being called “domestic terrorism”, had targeted military institutions. Four marines, Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Lance Cpl. Skip Wells, Sgt. Carson Holmquist, and Staff Sgt. David Wyatt passed away on July 16, from wounds received during the shooting. A fifth service member, Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith of the U.S. Navy passed away early Saturday morning, also from wounds received during the shooting.

honoring the fallen 3Flags across the state have been ordered to fly at half-staff through dusk, Friday, July 24, in honor of the fallen soldiers.

“It was very painful and devastating to hear about the recent shootings in Chattanooga,” stated Grundy County Mayor Michael Brady. “Being so geographically close to us, this tragedy has really hit home about the dangers servicemen and servicewomen face on a daily basis. Grundy County sends out thoughts and prayers to the families of the servicemen who lost their lives.

“We will have a service on the courthouse steps and lawn to honor the families of the servicemen.”

The service will be held at the Grundy County Courthouse in Altamont at 6 p.m. on July 23.
