The South Pittsburg Christmas tourney provided tough going for the Jackets and Lady Jackets as each team only won one of the three games they played. The girls downed South Pittsburg and the boys defeated Chattanooga School for Arts and Sciences.

The Lady Jackets moved to 7-11 overall and remain 2-3 in the district. The men are now 3-14 and remain 1-4 in the district.

Monday Grundy travels to South Pittsburg for games beginning at 5:30. Tuesday they host Moore County at 6:00. Get out and support Grundy basketball this week!

CSAS 55 – Grundy 45

he Lady Jackets held a lead throughout the first half going up 6-4 after one and 21-16 at the half. Things fell apart in the third quarter when CSAS posted a 23-11 effort. They also won the final quarter 16-13 on the way to the 10 point win.

“This was a game that we were very capable of winning. In the third quarter, we just didn’t come out to play and they did. We led at halftime by five and by the end of the third we were down by seven. We just didn’t come out from the half ready to play and we just didn’t play aggressive enough,” said Coach Julie Davis.

MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets with 19 points including a three. Peyton Eads followed with eight. Hannah Phillips scored six. Teah Bosio tossed in five with a three. Kelsey Arbuckle had four and Madison Burrows scored three.

Van Buren 63 – Grundy 42

The Lady Eagles of Van Buren County are a strong team with only three losses on the season. They took command early over Grundy with a 14-7 first quarter and a 24-16 second. Their 23-8 third quarter put the game out of reach for the Lady Jackets.

“Van Buren is a very good team. We knew going into the game it was going to be tough just from mutual opponents. We didn’t play too bad to start off the game but we just couldn’t overcome their three pointers. They had nine three pointers in the game and one girl had five. We just couldn’t guard her,” said Davis.

Hannah Phillips topped Grundy’s scorers with 10 points. Kelsey Arbuckle and Haylee Northcutt followed with seven each and both hit a three. MiKayla Williams and Teah Bosio scored four each with Bosio nailing a three. Kelsey Harriman also had a three pointer. Madison Burrows added two points and Lacy Nunley had one.

Grundy 51 – South Pittsburg 37

The Lady Jackets notched a win in their final game of the tournament Monday. They controlled the first half with 13-7 and 13-10 efforts. The Lady Pirates mounted a small comeback effort with an 11-8 third quarter but Grundy’s 17-9 final quarter finished them off.

“I told the girls this was an ugly win but an ugly win is better than a pretty loss. We should have won by a lot more than we did but defensively we just didn’t show up. We’re having glimpses were we look great. We’ve just got to find a way to carry that through four quarters,” said the coach.

MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets with 19 points including two threes. Kelsey Arbuckle followed with 12. Madison Burrows scored seven with a three. Peyton Eads notched five. Teah Bosio and Haylee Northcutt scored three each. Hannah Phillips added two.

Grundy 65 – CSAS 64

The Jackets provided some excitement in their first game of the tournament with a one point win over the Patriots of CSAS. Grundy jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter lead. The Patriots trimmed four off that lead by half. Grundy was up 48-44 after three and held off the Patriots in the final quarter for the win.

“This was a huge win for us. The last I checked they were in the top 5 of Class A basketball. The guys played a great game. We played with a lot of intensity and made a lot of big plays,” said Coach Justin Bryant.

Trey Hampton led Grundy’s winning effort with 21 points including four three pointers. Tanner Smartt scored 14. Trevor Hampton was also in double digits with 13. Boo Goins scored nine with a three. Terrince Bramhall tossed in eight.

Van Buren Co. 69 – Grundy 37

The Eagles were in command from start to finish. Their defense held the Jackets to single digits in each of the first three quarters while they produced high numbers offensively. Van Buren won every quarter by 18-8, 19-7, 16-9 and 25-13 scores respectively.

“This was a tough loss. It was a very physical game. We had a run at the end of the game that put a scare in them. We’ve got to start playing all four quarters with the intensity we had in the fourth quarter of this game,” said Bryant.

Jacob Martin topped the Jackets with nine points including a three. Terrince Bramhall followed with eight. Boo Goins scored seven. Tanner Smartt had six. Trevor Hampton tossed in four. Trent Hampton hit a three pointer.

South Pittsburg 60 – Grundy 56

The Pirates used a 31-21 first half to take command and then held off a strong rally by the Yellow Jackets in the second half to win the final game of the tournament. Grundy played strong with a 16-11 and 19-18 third and fourth quarter but just couldn’t escape the Pirates.

“We played a sloppy first half that got us in a hole. We played a great second half. With two and a half minutes to go we were down 10 points. We made a run and tied the game around 15 seconds left with a big three point shot by Trey Hampton. We had a chance to win the game and missed the shot on the next series. They ended up hitting some free throws on a foul that was called and beat us. This was a heart breaker. I’m super proud of the way they guys played in the second half,” said the coach.

Trey Hampton led the way with 22 points with two threes. Terrince Bramhall followed with 14. Trevor Hampton had 11 with a three. Boo Goins had four. Jacob Martin scored three and Tanner Smartt had two.
