The Grundy County High School Golf Teams wrapped up the 2016 season this past week, but not before bringing a trophy back to the mountain. The Jackets traveled to Fall Creek Falls on Thursday, September 15 for the District 7A-AA Tournament with high hopes of finishing at least third, which would earn them a spot in the Region 4A-AA Tournament. The boys’ team exceeded expectations, finishing Runner-Up (2nd) to a strong Signal Mountain Team. Senior John Meeks finished 4th overall with a score of 83. In girls play, Junior Emily Smith qualified for region play with a score of 107.  District 7 A-AA Boys Team scoring was as follows:

The top three teams advance to Region 4A-AA Tournament.

On Thursday, September 22, the boys squad, along with Emily Smith of the girls team once again made the trek to Fall Creek Falls for the Region 4A-AA Tournament. The Jackets were led by John Meeks and Zack Borne, who both carded a 91. Emily Smith scored a 113 in girls’ competition. While the season ended there for the Jackets, Coach Trey Foster was really pleased with the team this year, “this is the most talented, hardest working group we’ve had in several years. I know they’re disappointed, but for Emily to advance to region in the girls, and the boys to advance as a team and have a record of 22 wins and 8 losses is pretty amazing. Three of our eight losses were to two of the better teams in A-AA in the state. I’m really proud of all of them.”

Region 4A-AA Boys Team scoring was as follows:

First: Macon County – 324; Signal Mountain – 332; Goodpasture –          345; DeKalb County – 353; Clay County – 368; Grundy County –       383 (John Meeks 91, Zach Borne 91, Ajay Tenenbaum 95, Hunter Ladd 105, Grant Dees 125).

First place team advances to TSSAA A-AA State Tournament.
