Notre Dame 33 – Grundy 28
It was a tight game throughout with the Lady Irish holding a two-point lead after one and the teams tied at 17-17 by halftime. The second half was a defensive struggle and the Lady Jackets just could not find the basket enough to prevail.
“We just don’t play smart. We’re more worried about ourselves than the overall team. We have people that are wide open and we don’t give them the shot even after they’ve hit shots. The bottom line is we just don’t play together for whatever reason,” said a disappointed Coach Julie Davis after the game.
Teah Bosio led the Lady Jackets with 15 points including two threes. Madison Burrows followed with six. Lacy Nunley tossed in four and MiKayla Williams hit one three pointer.
The Jackets just couldn’t get in the groove early in the game and got down by as much as 20 points. At the end of the third quarter, they were down 51-25. They made a strong comeback effort with a 24-15 quarter but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Indians.
“One of the big things tonight was a lot of mental problems. Whenever we play Sequatchie we always expect a big game. We got down by almost 20 and they didn’t lay down. They fought back and fought back. We actually won the second half and that’s been a while since we’ve done that,” said the coach.
Madison Burrows topped Grundy with 12 including two threes. MiKayla scored eight with a three. Peyton Eads also scored eight. Lacy Nunley notched seven with a three. Kelsey Arbuckle had six. Teah Bosio scored five and Hannah Phillips hit a three.
Grundy 77 – Marion Co. 51
Grundy’s girls got back in the groove Saturday in Jasper with a win over the Lady Warriors. After a close 11-11 first quarter Grundy turned up the heat with hot offense and good defense the rest of the way. Marion could handle neither as the Lady Jackets won the last three quarters by 22-13, 25-15, and 19-12.
“I think a lot of it’s mental. We feel like we can be in control. Marion has beaten Sequatchie this season. I don’t think we were intimidated by Marion. We were talking and saying if we took their uniforms to Sequatchie and let them wear them we’d beat them,” said Davis.
MiKayla Williams led the way with 21 points including five threes. Madison Burrows and Haylee Northcutt scored 14 each with Northcutt hitting three treys. Kelsey Arbuckle was also in double digits with 12 points. Hannah Phillips scored eight. Teah Bosio tossed in six and Lacy Nunley added two.
Notre Dame 75 – Grundy 70
Grundy jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter lead and were up 32-21 at the half. The Irish cut seven off the lead by the end of the third with a 22-15 quarter. The final quarter was a scoring frenzy with Notre Dame posting a 32-23 quarter to take the district win.
“We knew what they were going to do defensively the second half. I think it came down more to turnovers. Boo and Terrince got in foul trouble early in the third quarter and that hurt us. That’s when they made their run. I told the guys I honestly don’t know how we lost. I really think that we outplayed them in every aspect of the game tonight. It was one of those games that you just don’t know how you lost. Our guys played a great game. I’m super proud of them offensively and even defensively. We’ve just got to find that way to win and once we do we can play with anybody in our district,” said Coach Justin Bryant.
Tanner Smartt led the Jacket with 24 points. Trey Hampton followed with 22 including six three point shots. Trevor Hampton tossed in 19. Trent Hampton had five points with a three.
Sequatchie Co. 63 – Grundy 54
The Jackets led by two after one but gave up a 19-9 second quarter to trail 28-20 at the break. By the end of the third, the Indians had added eight to their lead. Grundy battled back with a 23-16 fourth quarter but it just wasn’t enough.
“We played a good game. It was a very good game throughout. Sequatchie is playing very good basketball right now. We played hard. It was a tough loss. Anytime you play Sequatchie it’s a big rival game but our kids played hard and we just came out short,” said Bryant.
Trevor Hampton topped Grundy with 16 points with two threes. Jacob Martin and Trey Hampton both scored 12 and both hit two threes. Boo Goins tossed in nine with a three. Terrince Bramhall scored four and Tanner Smartt had one.
Marion Co. 45 – Grundy 44
Grundy led by four after one and six at the half to be up over the Warriors 26-20. The Warriors chipped five off that lead in the third quarter. Both teams struggled offensively in the final period but Marion’s 9-7 effort was good for the one point win.
“We built that big lead working the ball inside and they called a timeout and for some reason we just quit working the ball inside. Then they went on their run. We had our chance at the end to win the ballgame. We just didn’t finish. That’s part of the game of basketball and we’ll just continue to work to get better,” said the coach.
Trevor Hampton led again with nine points. Boo Goins followed with eight with a three. Terrince Bramhall also had eight. Trey Hampton and Tanner Smartt scored six each. Jacob Martin notched four with a three. Trent Hampton added three points.
