The Yellow Jackets gave the fans plenty of excitement Friday night at homecoming in a back and forth contest. In the end, Watertown’s Tigers would post a seven point victory. Grundy fell to 1-3 overall and remain 1-0 in Region 4 Class 3A.
“The boys played a hard fought game, I am very proud of how much they have improved. Fighting back to take the lead is how we want to respond, I never saw any of them hang their heads. That was a tough loss on all of us, but we aren’t going to dwell on it. It’s on to Upperman and continuing to work fundamentals,” said Coach Casey Tate.
The Jackets got behind early giving up two TDs to the Tigers in the first quarter on short runs. Down 14-0 Josh Wingo put Grundy on the board at 5:34 of the second quarter with a 69 yard touchdown run. Corbin Lusk threw to James McDaniel for the two-point pass and the lead was cut to 14-8.
Watertown would extend their lead at 9:40 of the 3rd quarter on a four-yard run and PAT making it 21-8.
Grundy would take charge of the game for the rest of the quarter. At 3:42 Kevin Castro ran in from 4 yards out. The run for two failed but the lead was cut to 21-14. At 1:55 of the quarter, Castro struck again on a 66 yard pass interception for a score. Josh Wingo ran in the two-point conversion and Grundy led 22-21. After another turnover, Wingo notched his second TD of the night from 15 yards out. The pass for two failed but the Jackets led 28-21.
Grundy would hold that lead until 8:54 to go when Watertown would score on an 11 yard pass. They missed the kick though and the Jackets would remain in the lead 28-27. The Tigers would post a four yard TD run with 5:39 to go and would run in the two point conversion to take a 35-28 lead. That would be the final score.
Josh Wingo led the Grundy offense with 107 yards on 11 carries and a pass reception for 18. James McDaniel had 58 on 12 carries and 10 yards on a pass reception. Kevin Castro gained 21 yards on five carries.
McDaniel led the defense with nine total tackles. Castro and Travis Cunningham followed with 7 stops each. Wingo registered six tackles. Josh Hoback and Cody Crisp made five tackles each. Daniel Anderson, Dewayne Grooms and Zack Brody had four tackles each with Brody adding a fumble recovery.
Grundy travels to Upperman Friday for a region contest. The Bees are 2-2 on the season and haven’t played a region game. They lost 34-26 to Cookeville, defeated Monterey 13-7 and Trousdale County 34-14 and lost last week to Stone Memorial 41-22.
It’s an important game for Grundy this week. The road trip will give the Yellow Jacket faithful a chance to stop by Ralph’s Donuts in Cookeville on the way to the game. A victory for the Jackets would be just as sweet as one on those donuts.
