PALMER TOWN HISTORIAN
The 33rd Annual Grundy County Spelling Bee will be held at the historic Palmer Elementary School on February 3, at 11 a.m. Awards to be presented include the 12th Annual David Patton Spelling Award, 11th Annual Louise Geary Layne Courtesy Award, 10th Annual Y.B. Ashby Teamwork Award, 7th Annual Shannon Brown Memorial Award, and the 6th Annual Faithful Attendance Award.
Since the event began in 1985, North Elementary School and Tracy City Elementary School have had far more GCSB champions than any other schools – but that hasn’t happened lately.
Stella Parris was the last champion from North in 2009; Kaitlyn Evans was the last Tracy City student to win the GCSB in 2011. It has been 20 long years since Palmer Elementary had a champion. That was Brooke Layne in 1997 when bill Clinton was still president.
Everyone is invited to come out and watch these young students compete in this exciting academic endeavor. In a shocking development, the boys swept the top honors in 2016. Can they continue or will the girls rule once again this year?
