The Mountain Goat Trail Alliance, the Town of Monteagle, and leaders from Franklin, Marion, and Grundy counties celebrated the grand opening of the Mountain Goat Trail Phase Three and Pedestrian Enhancement on Friday, May 15, at Tom’s Place in Monteagle. The original trail carried coal and passengers from 1856 to 1985 through the Franklin and Grundy counties. The Alliance has reclaimed the railroad’s path, and created a scenic recreational path that will eventually span 35 miles. Phase One of the Pedestrian Enhancement in Monteagle saw the completion of sidewalks from Hwy 41 to Sampley Street. Phase Two of the Enhancement will extend the sidewalks to the Wilco/Hess Station. Mayor Marilyn Rodman spoke of the vison Monteagle shares with neighboring counties and said she feels the infrastructure and growth is important for the area’s future. Rodman said the Enhancement will make Monteagle “what it should be,” providing recreation to residents and bringing tourism to the town.
