On Tuesday afternoon, the temperature hovered around 94 degrees as the GCHS Cross Country Team ran their first race of the season in Winchester. As part of a new region, the Middle Tennessee Cross Country Association, the Yellow Jackets faced runners from Franklin, Lincoln, Moore and Warren Counties.
The men’s race was first on a course that started at the school’s track then meandered around the school on both pavement and grass. Returning runners JC Beene, Austin Campbell, John David Dickerson, Brandon Nunley, and Jathan Campbell placed themselves firmly within the first mile of the race. New team members Caleb Grimes and Matthew McFarland rounded out the seven GCXC runners required to compete as a team.
Compete, or rather, dominate is what they did on Tuesday. Overall finishers were John David Dickerson-2nd, Jathan Campbell-4th, Austin Campbell-6th, JC Beene-7th, Caleb Grimes-11th, Brandon Nunley-18th, and Matthew McFarland-24th. Team totals were based upon the first seven finishers from each school, and the Yellow Jackets were first with the score of 72, edging out Warren County who finished with 79 points. This first place win, the Yellow Jackets’ first team victory, was especially sweet since this is only the sport’s third year of competition.
The women’s race followed the men’s with Grundy County’s only female XC runner, Julie Nance. As a senior, this is Julie’s third year to race with the Yellow Jackets. She quickly established herself among the lead runners and finished third overall.
The Yellow Jackets traveled to Warren County on Tuesday for their next meet. Results were not available for press time. No halftimes. No timeouts. No substitutions. Go run!
