Local community members came together to support the Grundy County High School Reality Store event on November 25. GCHS students from Mrs. Foster’s Computer Application courses were given the amount of play money equivalent to the average monthly salary in the occupation based on their program of study.
Students were given choices on how to budget and spend their money including necessities and luxuries that they envision as part of their adult lifestyle. Representatives from the housing industry (Monteagle Sewanee Realty), utilities (SVEC), grocery stores, financial institutions (Mountain Valley Bank), auto dealerships, child care, clothing, cell phone (DTC Wireless), health & fitness (Tenacity), travel & entertainment, and life’s unexpected (Grundy EMS) were included in the simulation.
The goal of this exercise was to help students determine whether their selected occupation within their program of study will provide enough financial support for the type of lifestyle they desire. In addition, this event was intended to motivate students to stay in school, away from drugs, and avoid teenage pregnancy.
