The Grundy County High School basketball teams went on the road last week, to Jasper and Crossville, and each team came away with a split in their District 7 AA games. The Lady Jackets defeated Marion County 43 – 23, while the Jackets defeated the Warriors 68 – 58 last Tuesday night. Last Friday night, both teams lost to Cumberland County. The girls lost 62 – 12, while the boys lost 63 – 51.
The split by the Lady Jackets left their season record at 4 – 12 with a district mark of 3 -3. The Jackets record now stands at 13 – 6 with a 4 – 2 district mark. The Jackets are in second place, while the Lady Jackets are in a position to finish no worse than third place with two district games left.
The next two games are their final two district contests. They travel to Pikeville tomorrow night (Friday) to take on Bledsoe County. The girls’ game will begin at 6 p.m. Next Tuesday night, the teams play host to Sequatchie County at GCHS with the girls’ game also beginning at 6 p.m.
The regular season is rapidly coming to a close. After these two upcoming district games, the teams will close out the season with three non – district games.
Lady Jackets 43 MCHS 23
The Lady Jackets put together their most complete game of the season with a 43 – 23 pasting of the Lady Warriors. The Lady Jackets dominated on the inside with senior post Delaney Hughes and junior post Kiera Hobbs combining for 26 points. Hughes led the way with 14 points, while Hobbs added 12 points. The Lady Jacket defense held the Lady Warriors to a total of 11 points combined in the first, second, and fourth quarters.
Cumberland County 62 Lady Jackets 12
The Lady Jackets couldn’t build on their win against Marion County when they faced the Lady Jets. The Lady Jets are one of the best teams in Class AA with one of the best players in the state in 2017 – 18 Miss Basketball finalist Gracee Dishman. The Lady Jets flew out to a 35 – 0 first quarter lead and glided the rest of the way to their 62 – 12 victory. Delaney Hughes scored five points for the Lady Jackets.
Jackets 68 MCHS 58
The Jackets snapped their two game losing streak with their season sweep of the Warriors with a 68 – 58 victory. The Jackets used the recipe that has helped them be successful all year with 10 three point field goals. They also connected on 12 of 19 charity tosses. The Jackets used a 22 – 13 third quarter to widen their lead on their way to their 13th victory of the season. Nine Jackets dotted the scoring column led by sophomore wing Jaden Ruehling’s 14 points. Seniors Kenzie Hill with 13 points and Cullen Anderson with 11 points also scored in double digits.
Cumberland County 63 Jackets 51
The Jackets fell behind the district leading Jets 34 – 20 at the half and couldn’t get much closer in the second half although they outscored their hosts by two points on their way to the 63 – 51 defeat. The Jackets connected on seven three pointers and 10 of 19 free throws, but failed to get anyone in double figures in the scoring column. Nine more Jackets scored with Jaden Ruehling scoring nine points to lead the way. The Jets pretty wrapped up the number one seed for the district tournament. They are undefeated in district play and swept the Jackets on the season, who are in second place with two games to play.
The Jackets need at least one win in their remaining two games to get the second seed in the tournament. A sweep of the two games will guarantee a second seed. The Lady Jackets need a sweep to have a shot at a second seed. A split should place them in third place for the upcoming tournament.
