The Grundy County Lady Yellow Jackets and Yellow Jackets opened District 7 – AA play last Friday night, at home, with wins against valley rival Marion County. The teams are 1 – 0 on the season in district play. They played host to Cumberland County on Tuesday night, and tomorrow night (Friday), they will play host to Bledsoe County. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 p.m. Next Tuesday, the teams will play host to Huntland, with a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
The Lady Jackets and Jackets played two other games last week against Cascade and Warren County. The Lady Jackets lost to the Lady Champions of Cascade 69 – 48 last Monday night and to the Lady Pioneers of Warren County 63 – 52 last Thursday night. The Jackets defeated the Champions 73 – 69, while losing their first game of the season at the hands of the Pioneers 65 – 46.
The Lady Jackets de-feated the Lady Warriors of Marion County last Friday night 50 – 47. The Jackets won their game 76 – 62. The Lady Jackets are 2 – 7, while the Jackets are 9 – 1.
Cascade 69 Lady Jackets 48
The Lady Champions got the season sweep with the 69 – 48 victory at home last Monday against the Lady Jackets. The Lady Jackets kept it close for a half, but the hosts slowly pulled away in the second half. The positive sign for the Lady Jackets was the leading scorers on the evening were freshmen. Jordan McCullough led the way with 12 points, while Abi Childers added 10 points. Also, 10 Lady Jackets hit the scoring column.
Warren County 63 Lady Jackets 52
The Lady Jackets played the Lady Pioneers toe to toe for the 1st, 2nd, and 4th quarters, however a 27 point third quarter proved to be the difference as the Lady Pioneers put some distance between the Lady Jackets and themselves. Junior post Kiera Hobbs scored 21 points to lead the Lady Jackets. Junior wing Peyton Mainord added 12 points.
Lady Jackets 50 Lady Warriors 47
The Lady Jackets playing before a packed house at GCHS raced out to a 21 – 4 lead after the first stop to spark them to their district victory. The Lady Jackets were able to hold off a charge by the Lady Warriors to win the game. Senior post Delaney Hughes had a big night with 15 points to lead the team. Mainord and Childers chipped in with 10 markers each. The win also snapped a five game losing streak.
Jackets 73 Cascade 69
The Jackets used a 26 – 6 third quarter to spark a come from behind victory over the Champions and the season sweep. The win gave the Jackets their eighth straight victory to open the season. Once again 10 three point baskets were big in the win. Senior swingman Cullen Anderson poured in 21 points to lead the victory. Sophomore wing Jaden Ruehling nailed four treys for 12 points, while sophomore point guard Jordan Hackworth added 10 points. Once again, 10 Jackets dotted the scoring column.
Warren County 65 Jackets 46
The Jackets suffered their first loss of the season as the host Pioneers raced out to a 37- 12 first half lead. The Jackets saw a team that could shoot like they are capable of, as the Pioneers nailed 13 three pointers. Anderson led the team with 15 points. The Jackets only made five three point shots. The Jackets did play hard in the second half outscoring their hosts by six points.
Jackets 76 Marion County 62
The Jackets started off slow for the third consecutive game, but exploded for 67 points in the final three stanzas to pull away from their rivals 76 – 62. The Jackets got back to what they do best with 10 players scoring and hitting 13 three pointers en route to their victory. A 24 – 11 fourth quarter sealed the district opening win. Anderson led the team with 19 points. Senior Kenzie Hill shook off a mild scoring slump to add 11 points. Ruehling scored 10 points.
