GCHS Class To Celebrate 40th Reunion

reunion 1reunion 2The class of 1974 will be celebrating their 40th Reunion on August 23 at Cliff Tops in Monteagle.
When the class of 1974 graduated from Grundy County High School, it was the largest graduating class to that date with 152 students.
Mr. Fred Parks was the principal and the vice- principals were Mr. Buford Newsome and Mr. Paul Street.
Betty Caldwell was valedictorian and Vickie Hayse was salutatorian with Shirley Street, Ginger Lowe, Roselyn Childers, Sandra Burrows, Dorothy Mainord, Sandra Curtis, Johnnie Bone, and Renee Griswold completing the Top 10.
Shirley Street and Johnnie Bone were voted Best All- Round Girl and Boy and were representatives to Girl’s and Boy’s State. The D.A.R. Representative was DeEtta Northcutt.
Senior officers were: President – Lori Kildgore, Vice-President – Johnnie Bone, Secretary, Secretary – Karen Rymer, Treasurer – Sandra Curtis, and Reporter – Mary Shrum.
The class favorites were Luann Tate and Alan Dykes. Annual King and Queen were Alvin Powell and Pat Butner.
Jenny Scruggs and Charles Thomas were voted most popular. Most likely to succeed were Vickie Hayse and Johnnie Bone. Most school spirit were Lori Kildgore and Andy Anderson. Shirley Street and Keith Pirtle were most outstanding.
Voted best personality were Cheryl Sanders and Alan Dykes and friendliest were Luann Tate and Terry Shrum. Thula Givens and Jimmy Rogers were the wittiest, and the most mischievous were Jan Layne and Noel David Crabtree.
Betty Caldwell and Leon Woodlee were the most athletic and the most talented were Mary Shrum and Don Smith. Most versatile were DeEtta Northcutt and Harold Schlageter. Sandra Curtis and Andy Weaver were most dependable. The most courteous were Roselyn Childers and David Meeks. Shyest were Sharon Childers and Kenneth Lockhart. Ginger Lowe and Dennis Cleek were the neatest. Mr. and Miss GCHS were Kathy Kilgore and Collis Gipson.
There were 13 seniors on the football squad that year: Kenny Layne, Norman Hill, Andy Anderson, Mike Parks, Johnnie Bone, Charles Thomas, Keith Pirtle, Tim Seals, Leon Woodell, Russell Layne, and Alan Dykes. Harold Schlageter was the captain of the boys’ basketball team and Richard Dyer was one of the first string starters.
On the girls’ basketball team were Captain Betty Caldwell and Karen Rymer. Managers for the team were DeEtta Northcutt, Vickie Hayse, Lena Hobbs, and Sandra Curtis.
Leon Woodlee, Eddie Clay, Tommy Christian, Roger Eldridge, and Mike Parks were on the baseball team and Larry Hargis was one of the managers.
Seniors on the cheerleading squad included Ginger Lowe, Jenny Thomas, Cheryl Sanders, and Lori Kildgore. There was also a Pom-Pom Team with Luann Tate, Jan Layne, Carol Caldwell, Darlene Berry, Marsha Tate, Betty Caldwell, Sharon Graham, and Rene Mansfield.
Betty Caldwell, DeEtta Northcutt, Cheryl Sanders, Shirley Street, Jenny Thomas, and Jan Layne were on the annual staff and Mrs. Elizabeth O’Dear was the advisor.
Lori Kildgore was the editor of the school paper. Senior staff members were Renee Griswold, Sandra Curtis, Mary Shrum, Carol Caldwell, Teresa Womble, Vickie Hayse, and Karen Rymer. Glenn Dillehay and Wanda Sanders were the sponsors.
The Beta Club included President Betty Caldwell, Vice-President Vickie Hayse, Secretary Karen Rymer, and reporters Jenny Scruggs, Peggy Conry, Sandy Burrows, Renee Griswold, Lori Kildgore, Johnnie Bone, Sandra Curtis, Cheryl Sanders, Shirley Street, Ginger Lowe, Denise Layne, and Dorothy Mainard. Sponsors were Mr. Winton and Mrs. Price.
The Library Club included President Mary Shrum, Thula Givens, Sharon Childers, and Ernestine Davis.
Members of the 4-H Club were President Mary Shrum. Vice-President Delbert Kilgore, Noel David Crabtree, and Collis Gipson.
Margaret Meeks, Mary Shrum, Sandy Burrows, Sharon Graham, DeEtta Northcutt, Sharon Childers, Peggy Conry, Luann Tate, Connie Rhea, Jackie Brookman, Jenny Scruggs, Dorothy Mainard, and Karen Rymer were members of the Future Teachers Club.
Larry Hargis, Eddie Clay, Harold Schlageter, Delbert Kilgore, Lawrence Bradford, Jerry Henley, Alvin Powell, Eugene Scott, James Moran, and Bradford Meeks were members of the FFA.
