The Grundy County High School bass fishing team registered a big win Saturday in the tournament they hosted on Nickajack Lake along with B.A.S.S High School and the Tennessee BASS Nation. Grundy’s Garrett Whitman and Ben Franklin registered their first tournament win over a field of 21 boats from schools from Whitwell, South Pittsburg, Warren County, Gordon Lee and Murfreesboro Central Magnet School. Grundy had four of the top five places in the tournament.
Whitman and Franklin topped the field on a tough day with three fish weighing 7.83 pounds. Hunter Bouldin from Warren County finished second with two fish for 6.84 and had the big fish of the event with a 4.84 largemouth. Placing third were Zackary Hiett and Dakota Travis with two fish for 5.20. Travis’ 3.71 largemouth took second place in the big fish contest. Samuel Morgan and Eldon Posey placed fourth with two for 4.60 and Hank Lowrie and Daniel Stiefel were fifth with one fish for 2.34.
Those placing in the top 5 received very nice plaques sponsored by the TN BASS Nation provided my Mr. Johnny Pickett who was on hand to assist with the event. He also had goodie bags for each boat before the tournament with brand new baits. The GCHS Bass team provided draw prizes after the tournament for those that fished and their boat captains.
Grundy’s team is now fishing under the BASS High School banner and will host a four event trail in the spring that will allow teams to qualify for next summer’s high school national championship under BASS. More information will be released soon by BASS on how this trail will work.
The GCHS Bass Team is in its fourth year of existence. They are seeking sponsors for a new set of jerseys this year. Sponsors will have their logo or information placed on each jersey for the team. Limited spots on the jerseys are available. Contact Coach David Lowrie at 931-235-6216 if you are interested sponsoring the jerseys.
