Jim Gallagher will be inducted into the GCHS Sports Hall of Fame on August 6, joining nine other inductees as the class of 2016.
Gallagher entered GCHS in the fall of 1944. He played football for all four years and basketball for one year. He was captain of the 1947 football team.
Gallagher was an outstanding running back and a great end, who was said to have caught many passes. He was the place kicker for extra points on the team. His football teammates nicknamed him “Skidmore”.
Gallagher played guard on the basketball team and was known as being a fast little man. Known as “Big Boston” by his basketball teammates. He played for three coaches during his high school career – John A. Anderson, Lude Goodman, and Dillard Roberts.
Graduating in May of 1948, Gallagher married his high school sweetheart, Billy Jean Brown from Tracy City. They have a daughter, Susan who now lives in Florida. He was a very successful dairy farmer and chicken grower in Pelham Valley where they made their home. Gallagher is now retired and enjoys keeping up with his favorite teams. He loves GCHS sports and the sports programs of the University of Tennessee. He is a very faithful fan and can tell you many stories about quite a bit of the games he has seen.
I will close with a line from his Mountain Laurel; “Turn back, turn back, O, time in your flight. And make me a child, just for tonight.”
May everyone again be reminded of scenes and faces of activities and places which only those who attended GCHS can ever have the joy of reliving.
The 2016 induction ceremony and banquet will begin at 5 p.m., in the cafeteria on the campus of GCHS.
