January 27 was a bittersweet day for the family and coach of Alexa Fults. A Grundy County High School senior, Fults had brought Grundy County for the fourth consecutive and last time to the Middle Tennessee High School Regional Swimming Championship held at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville.
Despite missing some high school meets and having limited practices because of illness and still in the process of recovering, her goal for this meet was to swim and make the state cut in the 50-yard freestyle. She had previously qualified to swim the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle at state. Club teammates from Coffee, Franklin, Tullahoma, Warren, and Webb counties were excited when Alexa swam the 50 freestyle in 26.93 seconds and not only had a personal best time but made the state cut. Later that day, Fults swam the 100-yard freestyle in 59.59 seconds.
Fults’ last swim meet for the Grundy County Yellow Jackets will be the TISCA State Swimming Championship on February 10 and 11, at the Allan Holt Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
