South Cumberland park rangers have organized two hikes to celebrate the New Year. Each state park in Tennessee was encouraged to offer events through the “First Hikes” program. It is a great way to start 2015 and spend time in the great outdoors.
Savage Day Loop First Hike – 10:00 a.m.
Ranger Jessie will lead an educational hike on the Savage Gulf Day Loop. You will learn about the history of the Savage Gulf State Natural Area as well about the variety of plants and animals we may see along the way. You will enjoy a breathtaking view of the great Savage Gulf from a spot called Rattle Snake Point (do not worry; rattlesnakes will be deep in hibernation by then). Remember it will be cold so make sure to wear plenty of layers. The trail is an easy-moderate 4.3-mile hike so make sure to wear comfortable shoes as well. Meet at the Savage Gulf Ranger Station parking lot.
Foster Falls Hike to Laurel Gorge – 1:00 p.m.
Join Ranger Park at the Foster Falls parking lot for a moderate 5-mile out and back hike to view the gulf from atop the beautiful Laurel Gorge Overlook. The gorges this time of year are stunningly beautiful and it is worth it to bring your camera. Be prepared for cold weather hiking and bring plenty of snacks and water.
