The first annual Fiery Gizzrd Race followed the Fiery Gizzard Trail, starting at Foster Falls State Park going to Grundy Forest State Natural Area in Tracy City. Because the race is in the state park, only 100 runners were allowed to run the full marathon (26.2 miles) and the half marathon (13 miles). Runners from Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Georgia, Alabama, and South Dakota particfipated in the event. Racers ran over trails filled with roots and rocks and up and down hills, crossing streams, climbing boulders, and crossing the swinging bridge within seven hours. The youngest runner, Beca Wojnowiak, was a 2011 graduate of Grundy County High School who now lives in South Dakota. This race was not the kind Beca expected as she has only done street races since graduating, but she finished in the allotted time, made new friends, and hopes to return next year.
