Donna Gayle Gifford Basham, believed to be the longest serving administrator of elections in Grundy County history, will celebrate her seventieth birthday on May 1. She was born in Palmer in 1946, to Eugene Gifford and Georgia Lee Lockhart (both now deceased.)
“When Donna began her tenure in 1984, it was also the beginning of the computer age, and the regulations and changes in the office that are in place in 2016 couldn’t have been dreamed of back then. Some people just seem to be born to do a certain job, and Donna, with her social skills and competency certainly falls into that category,” says Palmer Town Historian David Patton.
“Over these many years, she has treated the voters and candidates with respect and fairness whether they be Republican, Democrat, or Independent. Her successor will have a tough act to follow in this sensitive government position.”
