Grundy’s 10-11 year old Bulldogs traveled to South Pittsburg with a mission in mind. When the night was said and done, they completed their mission and were Harvest Bowl champions after defeating North Jackson 15-7. The team finished the season with a 7-2 record.
The teams were scoreless through most of the first half. The Dogs put points on the board right before halftime when Jacob Dixon scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak. Grundy went for two, Dixon hit Turner Cash for the 2-point pass, and the Bulldogs led 8-0.
On the first possession of the second half, the Bulldogs drove the field and Dixon scored on a 25-yard quarterback keeper. Luke Sweeney ran in the one point conversion and Grundy held a 15-0 lead. North Jackson scored their touchdown late in the 4th quarter but couldn’t score any more.
“They’ve been coming out practicing since the last week of June, with a Saturday or two in there also. They’ve worked extremely hard to get here. We got beat by North Jackson in regular season and we were dying to face them sometime in the playoffs. What a better game than the harvest bowl?
“We got better through the season and came alive when it counted in the playoffs. Some of these boys didn’t win a game last year. The ones that moved up from the 8 and 9-year-old team only won one game all season. They played like they had something to prove this year and I’m proud of each one of them,” said Coach Evan Merrell.
Jacob Dixon led the offense with 94 yards of rushing, 2 touchdowns, and a two-point conversion pass. Luke Sweeney carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards and ran in a conversion. Michael Rollins had 27 yards on five carries. Turner Cash picked up 10 yards rushing on four carries with a two-point conversion pass reception.
Michael Rollins led the defense with eight tackles. Josh Childers and Gavin Tate made six tackles each with Tate notching a quarterback sack. Luke Sweeney had four tackles. Braxton Coffelt notched three stops. Jacob Dixon, Turner Cash, Gunner Meeks and Antonio Monson made two tackles each. Dylan Merrell, Riley Hammond, Bailey Totherow, and Peyton Huntley all had one tackle each.
