Brown Receives Honorary Diploma

Posted on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 1:40 pm

Mildred Tate Brown was presented her Honor-ary High School Diploma by the Grundy County School Board at last Thursday’s meeting. Brown is 95 years old and was born in Freemont, on Sep-tember 21, 1923.
The second oldest daughter of George and Margret Dyer Tate, she and her oldest sister were told one of them would have to quite school to stay home and help their mother with the younger children, which was a common practice for large families in those days. Brown felt her older sister was a better student and would benefit more from a high school education so she volunteered to leave school.
The fact she was unable to continue her studies al-ways bothered her. The Grundy County School Board made possible what was once thought to be a missed opportunity. At-tending the presentation were Brown’s children Vir-ginia Morrison, Katherine Nunley, Judy Burrows and Charles Brown; grandchil-dren Patricia Street, Tina Parker, Christopher Brown; great granddaugh-ter Amanda Johnson, and great-great grandsons Zayden and Ryker John-son, along with a hosts of friends.
