Brewer Takes the Reins of the Yellow Jacket Baseball Program

Posted on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at 10:00 pm

David Brewer was hired back during the summer to become the head coach of the Grundy County Yellow Jacket baseball team. Brewer becomes the fifth head coach for the 2020 – 21 senior class of the Yellow Jacket baseball team. After Chase Jones abruptly resigned after their freshman season, the senior class had Bryan Morris during their sophomore year, Marty Doino and Shaw Gamble during their junior year.

Coach Brewer brings experience and a fundamental philosophy to the Yellow Jacket baseball program. His goal is to build a program that will sustain consistency and integrity for the future. Over the last 10 years Coach Brewer has coached 17 and under American Legion and Dixie Baseball for three years, 19 and under American Legion and Dixie Baseball for two years, an assistant coach at McGavock High School for three years, and Stratford High School for two years.

His philosophy consists of conditioning and training hard. He commented, “We play as we practice.” He wants his team to play fundamental baseball and be disciplined at the plate. Coach Brewer stated, “It’s details that help make a competitive team.”

He wants to develop a program and for the team to reach the level they are capable of attaining. “It’s all about the players, not me,” he added.

Coach Brewer wants to keep his team motivated. “Baseball is a game of life, where you make adjustments,” he said. He doesn’t want any excuses or blaming officials. He wants players to adjust and push themselves to prepare for the next level after high school. He intends to make sure the players are given the exposure to show their talents for that next level.

Coach Brewer added, “The boosters have been amazing with their support and their labor to get the facilities ready for baseball season.” He also said, “There’s no better place to be than Grundy County!”

Coach Brewer will be assisted by Trey Foster and Mikey Brown. The Yellow Jacket roster will feature eight seniors with most of those being a part of a state tournament team as freshmen and a sectional team as sophomores. The senior class is composed of Bailey Hill, Jarom Huntley, Alex Killian, Joseph Miller, Braxton Norris, Dalyn Pickett, Jaden Ruehling, and Austin Thomas. Peyton Huntley is the lone junior on the roster. Sophomores include Junior Crisp, Jarred Huntley, and Logan Isbell. Freshmen members will be Charles Byers, Isaac Campbell, Will Foster, Gage Marcom, Colton Rogers, and Jaxon Woodlee. Coach Brewer hopes to add a few more players after football season.

Coach Brewer wants a strong off season conditioning program which includes weightlifting and running to prepare for the 2021 baseball season.
