The Governor’s Books from Birth 10th Anniversary Tour rolled into Tracy City on Wednesday, September 24. Stopping at Tracy City Elementary as part of its tour, First Lady Crissy Haslam read to students and then helped pass out gift bags. The books from Birth Foundation sends children ages birth to age five one free book per month.
Providing books in the home is a unique opportunity for family engagement, vocabulary, and reading skills development. Studies show that children with as few as 25 books in the home completed an average of two more years of schooling than those with no books.
The foundation partners with the Dollywood Foundation and has provided more than 20 million books to children since 2004. More than 384,000 five-year-olds have graduated from the Imagination Library.
Local affiliates enroll children in the program and communities raise money for one-half of the cost of the books. Through an annual state grant, the Governor’s foundation funds the other half. The Dollywood foundation manages selection, pricing, and distribution of the books.
