Ben Lomand Celebrate 60 Years

Posted on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 2:41 pm

For 60 years, Ben Lomand Connect has been working hard to make it easier for residents of Middle Tennessee and the Upper Cumberland to contact family and friends and conduct business. Today, Ben Lomand Connect invites the communities it has served for 60 years to attend its Annual Meeting on March 22 at the McMinnville Civic Center, in continued celebration of six decades of service.

As the story of many American companies begins, Ben Lomand Connect began with a dream. It was a dream of providing basic telephone service to the rural areas that other companies would not serve. Fueled by that dream, Ben Lomand Connect took the courageous first steps and in 1954, the McMinnville-Warren County Chamber of Commerce received the necessary 1,775 subscribers necessary to receive a loan from the Rural Electrification Administration (REA). Having been granted a loan, work began, employing the persistence to follow-through to a satisfactory outcome, which is still evident 60 years later.

The years and decades to follow proved three things: a company dedicated to keeping its rural community up to par with modern technologies, a community who fully supported it and the need for communication would stretch much further and basic telephone service. By the 1970s, Ben Lomand Connect accumulated 10,000 subscribers, becoming the fourth largest telephone cooperative in the country. The 1980s proved another boom in expansion, with 32,000 miles of line and 22,000 access lines available. The 1990s showed continued growth, hitting the mark of 30,000 subscribers and the inclusion of services like caller ID, auto recall, auto callback high-speed internet and Firewire DSL. Today, Ben Lomand Connect is proud to serve as one of the largest telephone cooperatives in the nation, offering local and long distance, television, Internet and home security services.

As Ben Lomand Connect continues to celebrate its 60-year anniversary, the public is invited to attend its Annual Meeting Celebration on March 22 at the McMinnville Civic Center, 500 Garfield Street. This family-friendly event, complete with live entertainment by The Rank Strangers, face painting and carnival games kicks off at 11 a.m., with a public meeting to be held at 2 p.m.
