The Jackets have gotten off to a slow start dropping all four games in the Hixson Wildcat Classic but rebounded Monday with a win over Notre Dame in the Mount Valley Classic. The team will play in the tourney the rest of the week.
“This is one of those years. I’ve said it since I started coaching. Baseball during the regular season, regular season games are glorified scrimmages especially when you’ve got a young team like we are. We’re going to have a lot of growing pains. We’re going to learn tons of things on the fly. In the games that we’ve lost, we’ve had tons of walks and tons of errors. We’re having trouble with small things like executing on first and third. Things that we’ve got to execute on we’re just not there yet.
“You can see we’re improving, we’re getting there. It’s just going to be a process. I told the kids the other day, we’re four games into a 30-something game season. We’re one week in to a seven-week season. We don’t want to get on a rollercoaster. We knew we’re going to make youthful mistakes with eight position guys that are brand new this year. We’re playing a pitching rotation with guys that there’s only one who had any games last year and I think he had two.
“There’s a lot of things we’re going to improve on. I’m not sure what our win-loss record will be at the end and I really don’t care. Last year is a prime example. It doesn’t matter if you have a great regular season, if you lose two games in the district tournament and your season is over. I’d much rather have gone in the district tournament and won four or five games and got out of the district tournament,” said Coach Chase Jones.
