Thomas “Tommy” Andrews, 41, charged with statutory rape and statutory rape by an authority figure on December 13, pled guilty to two counts of statutory rape on Monday.
Andrews, at the time a teacher at Swiss Memorial Elementary School and assistant football coach at Grundy County High School, was immediately suspended of all duties when arrested in December. He was released from jail on a $60,000 bond and required to wear a GPS monitoring device to ensure he had no contact with the victim. His Nissan Titan truck was seized and sent to the TBI lab in Nashville where it was processed for evidence.
The Grand Jury indicted Andrews for statutory rape by an authority on March 14.
Following his plea agreement on Monday, Grundy County Director of School Jessie Kinsey issued the following statement:
“The Grundy County School community is shocked and saddened by the news that one of our teachers, Thomas Andrews, has pled guilty to statutory rape. Mr. Andrews has been suspended without pay since these charges first surfaced, and he has resigned from his position in the Grundy County School System effective today.
“Please remember that at least two families are coping with this unfortunate situation. Out of respect for their privacy, the Board of Education and the Administration of the Grundy County Schools will have no further comment regarding this matter.”
Andrews sentencing is set for August 8, before Judge Smith.
