Grundy County Sheriff’s investigators got a huge break in several theft cases after a stolen property locator device and an alert deputy tracked down a stolen skid steer. The items involved in the theft were found at a location on B-Mine Road early Tuesday morning. The property caretaker immediately notified the Sheriff’s Office.

Several ATVs, tools, generators, and a skid steer had been stolen.  The skid steer was equipped with a stolen property recovery device that allowed the equipment to be tracked.

A short time later, law enforcement was notified the skid steer was in the Pelham area. Deputy James Payne had earlier been assisting the Tennessee Highway Patrol with a crash on Clouse Hill Road when he noticed a rollback hauling a skid steer pass through the area. Deputy Payne responded to where the locator device was pinging and identified the rollback as the one that he had seen earlier hauling the equipment. Investigators were called to the scene and recovered the skid steer.

Investigators were then led to a residence in Coalmont, where two ATV’s were recovered. As leads continued to develop, the Sheriff’s Office, along with the Tracy City Police Department, converged on a residence located at 959 3rd Street in Tracy City. Here deputies and officers found two more ATVs, car wheels, acetylene torches, and a stolen utility trailer. They also found two more suspects. Christopher Cannon was apprehended and Hershel Patterson fled on foot. Grundy county

Sheriff Clint Shrum stated, “We fortunate the property owner had equipped the skid steer with the locator device. I am also happy Deputy Payne was attentive to what was going on around him that morning and was able to identify the truck hauling the equipment.”
