The St. Andrews-Sewanee Mountain Lions traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to open up their season Saturday against Bowling Green Christian Academy. The Mountain Lions rallied in the fourth quarter to win 26-19.
The Mountain Lions wasted little time as they took the opening kickoff and moved 65 yards in 10 plays to take the lead. Senior Dustin Stensby walked into the end zone from six yards out and junior Gabriel Stevens added the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 5:49 left in the first quarter. BGCA scored on a 25 yard run with 3:52 left in the first half but missed the PAT. SAS took a 7-6 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Mountain Lions struck quickly in the third quarter as senior Emanuel Thombs scampered 45 yards with a little less than two minutes gone in the third. The PAT failed and they led 13-6. SAS stretched their lead to 19-6 when Stensby returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Once again, the extra point boot was no good. BGCA stormed back with a 45-yard touchdown pass and a successful PTA kick and cut the deficit to 19-13 after three quarters.
BGCA tied the game with 3:47 to go in the contest with a 20-yard run for a touchdown. The PAT kick failed and the game was tied 19-19. SAS scored 70 seconds later as Thombs raised into the end zone from 20 yards. Stevens added the PAT kick and the Mountain Lions led 26-19 with 2:37 left in the game. The defense kept their host out of the end zone and SAS secured the season opening win.
Offensively, Stensby carried the ball 26 times for 139 yards and an offensive touchdown. He was one for 2 through the air for 25 yards. Thombs added 97 yards on 11 totes. Blaise Zeitler added 52 yards on 10 carries. Jack Simon gained 12 yards on his lone carry. Bailey McLean had one reception for 25 yards.
Defensively, Justin Elgouhary led the charge with 15 tackles, a sack, and a blocked PAT. Zeitler added 7 tackles and a fumble recovery. Jalen Tillman had 5 stops and Stensby added 4 tackles along with his pick 6.
The Mountain Lions play host to Riverside Christian Academy out of Fayetteville at 4:30 p.m., in their home opener on Thursday, August 31.
