The girls will play at Sequatchie County in the opening round of the district tournament on Wednesday at 7:00. The boys will play Thursday at Chattanooga Christian at 6:00. Of course those games could get changed due to the predicted winter weather. Winners advance to the district semis and to the region tourney. Losers in the opening round games will see their seasons end. Get out to the hardwoods this week Grundy fans!

Grundy 59 –

Marion Co. 48 OT

No matter what the sport a Grundy versus Marion game always brings excitement. After dominating the Lady Warriors just a couple of weeks before the Lady Jackets had trouble with them all night February 4, in Ricky Richards Gym. Marion hit a shot at the buzzer to tie the game 48-48 and send it to overtime. The Lady Jackets dominated the extra period 11-0 to take the win

“We just didn’t play hard. It took overtime for us to really get aggressive. I went in and asked them what was wrong at halftime and Madison Burrows said, “We’re not playing hard.” That was the case. We’re not good enough to coast. It’s hurt not having Tori Sartain (out due to injury). She was out and she’s our leader on the floor. Kelsey Arbuckle did a good job and Peyton Eads did a good job inside. She was getting beat around early on and she continued to battle,” said Coach Julie Davis.

Peyton Eads topped the Lady Jackets with 14 points. Madison Burrows and Kelsey Arbuckle scored 12 each with Burrows hitting three treys. Kristin Hill scored 10 with a three. MiKayla Williams dropped in nine with two threes. Mallory Seals added two points.

South Pittsburg 50 –

Grundy 46

Up by three at the half the Lady Jackets lost the third quarter 14-6 to go down by five. A tight defense by the Lady Pirates gave Grundy fits. They could not break free enough in the final quarter to do the offensive damage needed to win.

“This was a difficult game. South Pittsburg played very aggressive and officials allowed them to play that way and we just couldn’t play through getting beat on. We missed way too many shots close to the basket and too many free throws, with that combination it makes it hard to come away with a win,” said the coach.

MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets with 10 points. Madison Burrows followed with nine. Kelsey Arbuckle had eight. Kristin Hill tossed in six. Peyton Eads scored four. Mallory Seals and Makayla Misiolek scored three points each. Hannah Phillips added two and Haylee Northcutt added one.

Grundy 44 –

Signal Mountain 25

The Lady Jackets played early in the afternoon on Saturday making up the district game with Signal Mountain. Our girls stepped up strong on senior night and took the win. The teams were tied 7-7 after one and then the Lady Jackets took control winning each of the final three quarters by four, eight and seven respectively.

“This was a good win for us on senior night and to finish up the regular season. All the girls played hard and contributed to this win. With this win it places us to play Sequatchie County at Sequatchie for the play in game. I’m happy for the girls to see them feel like they have accomplished so much after the win. I expressed to them that if they would work hard and play together like they did tonight then they would be able to experience that feeling again in a few days. Now it is time for us to stay focused and prepare for post season play,” said Coach Davis.

Madison Burrows and MiKayla Williams led the way with 10 points each. Kelsey Arbuckle followed with nine. Mallory Seals tossed in five. Kristin Hill scored four. Peyton Eads, Hannah Phillips and Haylee Northcutt scored two points each.

Grundy 48 – Marion Co. 44

The Jackets and Warriors always battle hard and this was no exception. It was back and forth all night with Grundy leading by two after one and four at the half. Marion posted a 20-7 third quarter to lead 38-29. The Jackets responded in kind in the fourth with a 19-6 effort. Grundy retook the lead with just under a minute to go and held on for the upset of the Warriors.

“Last night in our district game Terrince Bramhall comes to me and says, “Coach I’m ready to play. I want to beat Notre Dame but I can’t quit thinking about tomorrow night.” Anytime you play against Marion County you have that type of attitude. We played a great game and any time you beat Marion County it’s just an extra special feeling you get. We played excellent defensively. Their coach told me before the game they’re averaging 72-73 points a game and we held them to 44. I can’t say enough about Boo Goins. We went Box-in-one in the second half on their best player and Boo completely shut him down. We played a great game defensively,” said Coach Justin Bryant.

Trevor Hampton led the Jackets with 15 points including a three. Kasey Brown followed with eight. Tyler Rose hit two threes for six points. Terrince Bramhall and Devan Hampton had five each with Hampton hitting a three. Boo Goins scored four with a three. Tanner Smartt scored three points.

South Pittsburg 74 –

Grundy 53

The Pirates exploded for a 30-15 first quarter and Grundy tried to catch up the rest of the night Friday in the valley. They couldn’t pull back into striking distance.

“We came out flat defensively and they hit everything they shot in the first quarter. In the end, we couldn’t ever recover from that. We played a very good second quarter and made a couple more runs, but just couldn’t take the lead. Trevor Hampton had a very good first half where he had 17 of his 19 points. I’m proud of the guys and the way they continued to play so hard after giving up 30 points in the 1st quarter. That shows a lot about the character of this team,” said the coach.

Trevor Hampton topped Grundy with 19 points. Tyler Rose followed with 12. Kasey Brown and Tanner Smartt scored eight each. Terrince Bramhall added six.

Signal Mountain 74 –

Grundy 46

Coach Bryant put the focus on his seniors in their last game at Grundy and played all five of them most of the game.

“Today was a special day. It was senior day so I first want to thank Devan Hampton, Jacob Wingo, Dylan Mooney, Kasey Brown, and Tyler Rose. I appreciate these guys for their hard work and what they have meant to this basketball program. It was tough to get beat on senior day, but Signal is a very good team. We now have to turn our focus to the district tournament where we will play CCS at CCS on Thursday, at 6:00 central time,” said Coach Bryant.

Devan Hampton and Tyler Rose led the Jackets with 11 points each. Terrince Bramhall and Trevor Hampton scored seven each. Tanner Smartt and Jacob Wingo had five each.
