The Grundy County Yellow Jacket baseball team continued their struggles in District 7-AA as they were swept by Signal Mountain last Monday and Tuesday. Thursday the Jackets opened the Mountain Valley Classic with a 4 – 3 victory over Covenant Christian. Friday, the Jackets dropped one-run games to Coffee County and Marshall County. Saturday night saw the Jackets end their play in the Classic with a 6 – 4 win over Tullahoma.
The Jackets were set to battle Notre Dame Monday and Tuesday in a district series. They are traveling to Lawrence County tomorrow and Saturday for a weekend tournament. The Jackets will play host to Bledsoe County Monday at 5 p.m., and will travel to Bledsoe County on Tuesday. That game is also scheduled at 5 p.m. The Jackets are 7 – 13 on the season overall, while they slipped to 2 – 8 in district play.
After battling toe to toe with the district favorite, the Jackets couldn’t stop the Eagles in the final four innings. The visitors raced to 11 – 0 lead before the Jackets battled to score four runs in the seventh inning. Noah Bean had three of the five Yellow Jacket hits with two RBIs. Blaine Harris and Hunter Layne added the other two hits with a single each.
Signal Mountain 7 Jackets 4
The Jackets rode their momentum from the seventh inning of Monday’s game to jump to a 4- 0 lead after three and one half innings. The host Eagles showing patience for the second night in a row went to work in the fourth to score six runs and take the lead for good. Hagen Cash, Harris, and Bean all had two hits for the Jackets. Kaleb Meeks, Harris, and Cash had RBIs for the Jackets.
Jackets 4 Covenant Christian 3
The Jackets got back in the win column as they held off Covenant Christian 4 – 3. The Jackets scored two runs in the second and sixth innings to score just enough for the win. Covenant Christian scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough. Casen King went five and two – thirds innings for the victory. He gave up six hits and three unearned runs. He walked four batters and struck out four. Trent Hampton, Layne, and King each had a double. Trent Hampton and Steven Yates had two hits each.
Coffee County 4 Jackets 3
The Jackets gave up a run in the first inning and trailed 1 – 0 going to the bottom of the sixth. The Jackets went up 2 – 1 with a pair of runs. However, the Red Raiders rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to go back ahead 4 – 2. The Jackets would add one run, but that wouldn’t be enough. Harris led the Jackets at the plate going 2 – 4 with an RBI. Jacob Thomas and Trey Hampton combined on a six hitter with three of the four runs they gave up being unearned.
Marshall County 6 Jackets 5
The Jackets lost their second one run game on the day Friday as Marshall County scored a run in the last inning for the walk off win. After falling behind 5 – 1 after four innings, the Jackets rallied to tie the game with four runs in the fifth. Trey Hampton and Harris had two hits each. Harris scored two runs, while Hampton had two RBIs and a run scored. Trey and Trent Hampton had doubles.
Jackets 6 Tullahoma 4
The Jackets scored five runs in the second and added another run in the fourth and held off the Wildcats to even their Classic record at 2 – 2 with the 6 – 4 victory. Sophomore southpaw Steven Yates went five innings for the win. He gave up five hits and three earned runs, while walking three and striking out 11. Trent Hampton finished the game for the save. He gave up two hits, one run, and a strikeout. Harris and Bean had two hits each. Bean had a double and three RBIs. Kaleb Meeks added a solo homer.
