The Jackets, facing severe weather on Friday, were forced to play on Saturday instead for their first district game of the season. It was a tough loss falling to York 40-6. Grundy is now 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in district play.
The teams traded punches to start the game with York scoring twice on two long runs. The Jackets moved within the 10-yard line late in the second quarter but were turned away by the stout York defense. Grundy was unable to establish a running game but found some success moving the ball through the air. As the two teams headed into the locker room for the half, the score was 14-0 with York leading.
The second half of play was all York as they wore the Jacket defense down with power runs. York returned a fumble for a 15-yard score and continued their running game as the Dragons piled up 19 points moving the ball on the ground. The Jackets were able to move the ball through the air, and scored late in the contest on a pass from Hagen Cash to Trey Hampton.
“York is a big physical team and they didn’t allow us to establish any consistency running the ball. They play physical on offense and our defense held with them through the first half. Our offense is going to need to be more versatile so that we can get first downs and give the defense some relief and better field position. We will go back to work on Monday and correct mistakes,” said Coach Casey Tate.
“I love how this team fights to the last whistle and the coaches will continue to work on perfecting technique with them.
“I appreciate such a good crowd coming out on Saturday and supporting these kids. I know these young men appreciate it as well.”
Offensively, rushing the ball, Cash had 7 carries for 31 yards. Ethan Nunley had 6 for 16 yards. Hunter Sylvester carried the ball 3 times for 10 yards and Dagen Dodson rushed the ball one time for 5 yards.
Through the air, Cash had 11 completions on 24 attempts for 151 yards, one TD and one INT. Receiving, Hampton had 5 catches for 43 yards and a TD. Blane Harris had 2 catches for 41 yards. Evan Nunley had 2 for 37 yards. Ethan Chouinard had a grab for 11 yards and Ethan Nunley snagged one for 19 yards.
Defensively, Corbin Lusk and Kollyn Cooper led the way for the Jackets as they each had 6 tackles and 2 assist with Lusk having one TFL and Cooper having 2 interceptions. Josh Nance and Ethan Nunley each had 4 tackles, one TFL with Nance having 2 assist. Hampton had 3 tackles while Cody Esslinger, Evan Jaynes, Chase Meeks, Harris, Jordan Hackworth, Aaron Comer and Cash all had 2 tackles each with Esslinger and Meeks also having 2 assist.
The Jackets host the Bledsoe County Warriors tomorrow night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
