All eighth grade students to receive Chromebooks for 2017-2018 school year

The Grundy County Department of Education recently announced GCI (Growing, Creating, and Innovating), the digital initiative by which eighth grade students will engage in a blended learning curriculum through the use of their individually assigned Chromebook for the 2017-2018 school year.

During the 2016-2017 school year, Director of Schools Jessie Kinsey and the GCI advisory team visited Maryville City Schools to learn more about the implementation of digital learning. Teachers of eighth grade students participated in technology learning opportunities and visited Warren County Middle School to shadow teachers using digital devices to implement their curriculum through blended learning. Students competed by school to design a logo for the GCI digital initiative and the GCI advisory team chose the logo designed by Pelham Elementary School student Kennedy Landis to represent the district.

This opportunity became a reality when the Grundy County Board of Education passed the motion at a recent school board meeting.

All upcoming eighth grade students who are enrolled in Grundy County Schools will be eligible to receive a Chromebook for a $40 user charge each year. Additionally, protective covers will be dispersed.

Prior to deployment, parents, guardians and students will be required to attend an information session where they will learn about the initiative and their responsibilities while in possession of the Chromebooks, they will view a short film, and sign paper-work.

The deployment of the devices will be at the following schools on the following dates and times.

Tracy City Elementary School: July 17, 5 p.m. -7 p.m.

Coalmont Elementary School: July 18, 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

North Elementary School: July 19, 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Palmer Elementary School: July 20, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Swiss Memorial Elementary School: July 20, 5:30 p.m. -7 p.m.

Pelham Elementary School: July 21, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Grundy County High School: July 22, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
