Tracy City Downtown Revitalization
A few of the comments made by state officials when the Tracy City Downtown Revitalization Committee met with them last spring included, “A beautiful mountain village; A rural hamlet tucked amongst rolling hills; One of the most unique towns I’ve seen.” Of course, for those of us who live here, these words were nothing new. It is just confirmation of what we’ve known all along that Tracy City is a beautiful place to live. With the help of Tennessee Downtowns, this one-of-a-kind beauty can only grow.
The goal of the Tennessee Downtowns program is to revitalize Tracy City, and make it a hub of commerce, activity and life on the Cumberland Plateau. Those of us who comprise the Design Committee hope to help accomplish this by bringing attention to appearances of our businesses courtesy of a grant provided by the state. As part of this program, approved businesses have been awarded small grants allowing improvement of exterior structures, installation of enhanced landscaping, and the placement of a new and welcoming sign to Historic Downtown Tracy City.
With a deadline of June 7, work on these projects has already begun and will continue over the next two months. In addition to this work, city clean-up days will be held on April 12 and May 17. For more information or to volunteer please call 592-6213.
Though progress, these projects alone will not change Tracy City. True change will only come through hard work, determination, and belief that this community can be better. Many will recall Tracy City’s days as a railroad hub, the center of mining, and the “big town” on the Mountain. Those days are gone. We can’t look at the past and make Tracy City what it used to be; we must look toward the future, and make it what it needs to be.
