The Grundy hoopsters haven’t fared well as of late as they’ve both lost their last three games. The Lady Jackets moved to 8-16 overall and 2-7 in the district. The Jacket men fell to 3-22 and 0-9.
Tuesday Grundy hosted Marion County barring bad weather. Friday they travel South Pittsburg for a 6:00 start. Saturday Signal Mountain comes to The Mountain for makeup games beginning at 2:00 pm in the afternoon. Saturday will also be senior night for Grundy. That will close out the regular season and the teams will move to the opening round of the District 7AA tournament beginning Tuesday. Get out to the hardwoods this week Grundy fans!
Girls: CCS 42 – Grundy 38
A slow start was the biggest factor as Grundy got down 12-2 in the first quarter. They battled back throughout the game but just couldn’t pull off the district win. Turnovers and missed shots late prevented a successful comeback.
“We got down early. It was 14-2 in the second before we scored again. It was just a battle to try and get back into it. We were able to get pretty close but never able to actually get over the hump. Down the stretch with probably less than a minute to go we had turnovers after turnovers. We had missed lay ups. We had chances we just couldn’t capitalize,” said Coach Julie Davis.
MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets with 10 points with nine off three pointers. Kristin Hill, Mallory Seals and Madison Burrows scored six each with Burrows hitting a three and Seals hitting two. Kelsey Arbuckle and Peyton Eads scored four each. Tori Sartain added two points.
Coffee Co. 40 – Grundy 30
The Lady Jackets took an early 10-8 lead in this one but only scoring nine points throughout the second and third quarters put them down 27-19 going into the final quarter. The lack of offense was just too much and they fell to the AAA Lady Red Raiders.
“The girls played really hard in that game. The biggest thing was there were two quarters where we had a combination of nine points. In the second half we had a really long streak of no scoring and that really hurt us. MiKayla is still trying to get over her arm injury and with it not being a district game I’ve set her out a lot more. That took one of our scorers out of the picture,” said the coach.
Peyton Eads led Grundy with seven points. Mallory Seals hit two threes. Kristin Hill scored six. Kelsey Arbuckle had four. MiKayla Williams also had four hitting a three pointer. Madison Burrows hit a three pointer.
Grundy 40 – Notre Dame 30
Grundy led this one most of the way and fought off a Notre Dame comeback late to notch an important district win. Grundy won each quarter except the second in route to the 10 point win. “This was an important one to win tonight. The girls played really hard and they’re fired up about it. I told them we just have to keep on and carry it on out,” complimented Coach Davis. MiKayla Williams led Grundy with 12 points. Kelsey Arbuckle scored eight. Madison Burrows had seven. Kristin Hill notched six. Mallory Seals had five and Tori Sartain scored two.
CCS 46 – Grundy 28
The Jackets dropped a district game Friday night in Chattanooga falling at Chattanooga Christian. Trailing 23-17 at the half Grundy could only manage 11 points in the second half.
“We had some difficulties scoring the basketball. We always do against them. They’re a very good defensive team, the best defensive team in our district for sure. We played a really good game against them. They’re a better team than I originally thought. They’re playing well right now. It was a tough fought game and we just came up short,” said Coach Justin Bryant.
Trevor Hampton led Grundy with eight points. Devan Hampton followed with seven including two threes. Kasey Brown had six points. Terrince Bramhall added four and Boo Goins hit one three.
Coffee Co. 69 – Grundy 35
Things didn’t go much better in Manchester Saturday night as the Red Raiders downed the Jackets by 34 points. Grundy managed only six points in three of their four quarters.
“This game was a little different story. We played hard. They’re just a better team than we are. They’ve got one of the best players I’ve seen around this area. He’s very smooth. He runs their offense well. They just outplayed us at every facet of the game. We fought hard and played hard. They just played better than we did,” said Bryant. Tanner Smartt and Terrince Bramhall led the Jacket effort with 10 points each. Trevor Hampton notched eight. Kasey Brown, Devan Hampton and Matthew Burrows scored two points each.
Notre Dame 58 – Grundy 44
This game was closer than the final score would indicate. Grundy battled throughout the contest and pulled it close several times but lost each quarter by four, one, seven and two respectively. They just couldn’t find a way to take the district contest.
“We definitely had our chances tonight. We played a very good ball game. We played good on the defensive end. We played decent on the offensive end. It came down to free throws. They hit their free throws. I think we went 5 of 15 from the line. We left 10 off the board. We have to shoot better from the line. We’ve struggled with it all season. We have to commit to getting better from the free throw line,” said the coach.
Trevor Hampton led Grundy with 13 including a three. Tanner Smartt and Terrince Bramhall had 10 each again. Kasey Brown scored four and Devan Hampton hit a three pointer.
