Both Yellow Jacket teams got back into the win column Friday night when they defeated South Pittsburg in Ricky Richards Gym. The Lady Jackets moved to 6-13 overall and 1-5 in the district. The Jacket men improved to 3-17 and 0-6.
Tuesday Grundy hosted Notre Dame for a district contest. Friday they host Sequatchie County at 6:00. It’s also a Hall of Fame night where Lady Jacket legend Tannis Overturf will be inducted at halftime of the girls’ game. Saturday they travel to Marion County for a 6:00 start as well. Tuesday they host Signal Mountain for another district contest beginning at 5:30. Get out to the hardwoods this week Grundy fans!
Girls: Grundy 62 – South Pittsburg 43
It was a slow start followed by a big finish for the Lady Jackets Friday night. Grundy trailed 25-24 at the half after sluggish play. Someone flipped the switch in the locker room and they came out ready to play in the second half. Grundy posted an 18-10 third quarter and a 20-2 final to take the 19 point win.
“We had a good second half. The first half didn’t play very well at all. The first half was pretty bad. The second half they came out and played like they should have. They’re really pulling for each other now. They’re really cheering for each other and trying to motivate each other. That’s what we have to have going down the stretch. That’s been one of our problems. As long as they can get it going and play together as a team we can probably do some good things,” said Coach Julie Davis.
MiKayla Williams led the Lady Jackets with 13 including three threes. Madison Burrows followed with nine including a three. Kristin Hill tossed in eight. Kelsey Arbuckle, Tori Sartain and Peyton Eads had seven each. Mallory Seals added five. Mikayla Misiolek, Haylee Northcutt and Macey Meeks scored two points each.
Boys: Grundy 51 – South Pittsburg 50
The Jackets battled back and forth with the Pirates all night and kept the fans on their toes. Grundy led 17-13 after one only to have a big letdown in the second quarter and trail 31-20 at the half. They would chip away at the lead throughout the second half and only trailed by three at the end of the third. Boo Goins would nail a three pointer with just seconds left to put Grundy up 51-48. The Pirates were able to drive but couldn’t find an open three. They shot the two and hoped for the foul but couldn’t draw it and the Jackets took the win.
The Jackets struggled at the line hitting only 11 of 31 foul shots but found a way to win. Some credit goes to the student section that was loud and proud all night for the first time in a long time. Most hope the students will show up and support like this the rest of the season.
“We came out sluggish the first half. We had a pep talk at half time and came out with intensity and played a great second half. We were all over the floor. The big thing was getting over the hump and finding a way to win. I’m proud of them. I’m proud of each guy weather they played or not tonight. It was a great team effort all the way around. We went in and hollered a little bit in the locker room after the game and then I stopped them. I told them there weren’t many games we could win going 11 of 31 from the line. We practice free throws every day for 10 minutes and we ought to be able to hit them.
Without the big shot at the very end by Boo Goins, his defensive effort on their number 4 the second half was outstanding. I can’t say enough about it. He had a great game as a freshman,” said Coach Justin Bryant.
Trevor Hampton topped Grundy with 19 points. Devan Hampton followed with 10 with two threes. Boo Goins scored eight with a three. Terrince Bramhall had six. Tyler Rose hit a three pointer. Tanner Smart scored three and Kasey Brown had two.
