Basketball Teams’ Slide Continues
It’s been another tough week for Grundy basketball as both teams lost their last two games falling to Whitwell and Bledsoe County. The Lady Jackets fell to 5-13 overall and to 1-5 in the district. The Jacket men are 2-17 and 0-6.
Friday Grundy hosts South Pittsburg beginning at 6:00. Tuesday they host Notre Dame for a district contest beginning at 5:30. Get out to the hardwoods this week Grundy fans!
Girls: Whitwell 44 – Grundy 39
It was a 13-2 fast start for the Lady Jackets and then a long decline as they let the Lady Tigers climb back into it and take the win. Whitwell led 14-13 after one as they had erased the 11 point lead the Lady Jackets held. It was a stark turnaround as Grundy had dominated Whitwell before Christmas in the valley.
“We had too many turnovers. I made a mistake in the first quarter by subbing when we were up 13-2 and the next thing you know it was 14-13. They were right back in the game. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers and making bad passes and you can’t win like that,” said Coach Julie Davis.
Mallory Seals led the Lady Jackets with 14 points including four three pointers. MiKayla Williams and Kristin Hill both had nine and both scored threes. Tori Sartain tossed in seven with a three.
Bledsoe Co. 62 – Grundy 54
Grundy’s girls gave it their all Monday night against Bledsoe and played much better than their previous outing. The locals trailed by five after one and nine at the half but battled back in the second and came ever so close to the district win.
“I feel like tonight was a better game than we had on Friday night. We played together as a team more. Different girls wanted to step up and show what they can do. After the game on Friday I told them we were going to focus more on being a team because that’s what I felt we were lacking more than anything. I think it showed a lot more tonight and they were more aggressive on the floor. Even though we lost I feel like we played pretty well. We pulled it pretty close in the end and just had some shots that didn’t fall,” said Coach Davis.
MiKayla Williams topped Grundy with 17 including five from three point land. Mallory Seals followed with 14 with four threes. Kristin Hill scored 13. Madison Burrows 4 and Kelsey Arbuckle had four each with Burrows hitting a three. Tori Sartain added two points.
Boys: Whitwell 54 – Grundy 45
Grundy’s boys had a slow start trailing 14-3 after one quarter. They played stronger the rest of the way but couldn’t prevail.
“I think we made some pretty good adjustments at halftime. Our guys came out the second half and executed a lot better. I think what happened in the first half was us beating them by 30 down there on their court. I think we came out lazy. We weren’t hustling and we weren’t doing a lot of things right offensively or defensively and it came back to bite us in the second half. We just couldn’t get back into it. It really hurt us the first half. We weren’t hustling the way that I expect our team and the guys that I’ve got right now to hustle. That’s what we do best and that’s what we coach and we just didn’t execute well tonight,” said Coach Justin Bryant.
Trevor Hampton led the Jacket men with 14 points. Devan Hampton followed with eight with two threes. Kasey Brown scored seven with a three. Terrince Bramhall and Tyler Rose scored five each with Rose hitting a three. Tanner Smart scored four.
The Jackets got down early trailing 20-8 after one and 39-23 at the half. Undefeated in the district, Bledsoe County, padded the lead with nine more in the third and moved on to the win.
“I like the way we played and that’s what I told them in the locker room. I like the way we played offensively especially. We got a couple of kids in double figures and that’s what we have to have is offensive production. Defensively, they just didn’t miss shots. We ran man, we ran zone and it didn’t matter what we were in they hit shots. They didn’t even miss many three pointers. They’re the best team in our district right now. They haven’t lost in the district and they’re number one in the district. I’m proud of the way we played. We hustled tonight and hopefully we’ll come out Friday against a team that we can win against and hopefully we’ll have a good ball game,” said Bryant.
Terrince Bramhall and Trevor Hampton led Grundy with 10 points each. Kasey Brown followed with nine with a three. Tyler Rose notched eight. Devan Hampton had seven with a three. Tanner Smart scored four. Boo Goins, Kevin Stewart, Shawn Harriman and Mathew Burrows scored two points each. Dylan Mooney added one.
