New Year’s resolutions are not new nor are they usually lasting. Many folks don’t even write them down though they might make a list in their head. And I was not surprised to read that the resolutions to lose weight and exercise more are the most popular resolutions.
I’ve been thinking about my own journey, that is, exercise and me. No, I’m not great at making time to exercise other than gardening. But the more I read about it, the more I want to. Now I am on the verge of moving from ‘want to’ to ‘making it happen!’
Recently I saw a chart which showed how many minutes of running at 10 minutes per mile a 150 pound person would have to run in order to burn up the calories if they ate certain foods. I felt so overwhelmed at the running requirements listed! I knew I would not want to run 41 minutes just because I ate a large commercially prepared blueberry muffin! Or if I ate the whole bag of plain potato chips (that is an 8 oz bag), I’d have to run for 1 hour and 50 minutes! While a simple truffle might have 110 calories, it would take 10 minutes to run that off.
But wait, a nice medium apple is 100 calories! So what’s with this?
We need calories for energy. The problem is we are eating too many of them for the amount of exercise we are doing (or not doing). And the calories add up quickly when we eat them in a concentrated form such as a truffle, muffin, or potato chips.
Since I’m not interesting in running around the neighborhood, but I do want to start exercising, I had to find some encouraging information. I found that walking at a brisk pace burns almost as many calories as jogging the same distance. Also that no matter how poor a fitness level I am at, I can start exercising and improve my health and fitness. In fact, adding any level of movement into my regular routine can improve my overall health and wellbeing.
So even on a rainy winter morning I can do some exercise inside the comfort of my home. I can grab a couple cans of food to hold in my hands while I do some punches. I can carry those cans up and down the stairs to get my heart rate up. I can do some leg lifts or walk-in-place while I sit here at the computer and work.
Yes, I have resolved to begin exercising at least 4 days a week. What can you do to include exercise in your daily routine? 160 people have signed up for the Grundy Zumba Bootcamp, which will begin in February! Perhaps you are one of them. If not, can you resolve to begin some form of exercise this week to set you on track for improving your overall health and wellbeing?
