The Lady Jackets got their first win of the season knocking off rival Coffee County on a Hall of Fame night in Coalmont. Down 33-30 at the half Grundy battled back and a 16-9 fourth quarter pushed them to the win. The Lady Jackets were 24 of 29 at the line and that was a big key to the win. “It’s obvious our free throw shooting is what won us the game. A lot of close games that’s what it’s going to come down to is free throw shooting. We had five players that were perfect from the line. That’s what we have to have if we want to win close games. We had a desire tonight. That’s what we talked about is that this is their home court and they can’t let somebody come in and take it from them. We have to defend it. There are things we need to work on. We gave them way too many second chances. We’ve got to better boxing out. When we would box out we got over the back calls. That’s what led to our free throw shooting,” said Coach Julie Davis.
Macey Meeks led Grundy with 14 points, hitting two three pointers and six of six from the line. MiKayla Williams scored nine with a three pointer. Kristin Hill had eight points hitting four of four from the line. Kelsey Arbuckle scored eight hitting two of two free throws. Tori Sartain also had eight with a three and hitting five of six from the line. Julie Nance scored four with two of two at the line. Mallory Seals also scored four and Peyton Eads scored three.

Grundy took charge early and led throughout the first half. They were up 18-13 after one and 26-24 at the half. The Lady Indians turned things their way with a 19-9 third quarter and held off Grundy every time they tried to rally. “I think they just wanted more than we did. That was evident in the third quarter. We came in with a lead at halftime and walked back out thinking it was going to be a cake walk and they came out ready to play. They turned the ball game around. So it was a lack of want to on our part. It was a lack of focus and not very aggressive play,” said Coach Davis.
Kristen Hill led the way for the Lady Jackets with 17 points. Macey Meeks had 10 points with two threes. Peyton Eads also had 10 points. Kelsey Arbuckle had seven. Tori Sartain tossed in six. MiKayla Williams hit a three pointer. Mallory Seals scored two.
Boys: Coffee Co. 74 – Grundy 36
It was close for just a little bit with the teams being tied 9-9 in the first quarter. However the Red Raiders proved to be too much for the Jackets and had pulled out to a 24-11 lead by the end of the quarter. They rolled on to the big win in Coalmont. “We struggled after that very good start. We had a ton of turnovers and a lot of walks. I think with time and knowing each other that gets better. Like I’ve said before we’ve got a ton of new guys. There’s a ton of first year players that are getting a ton of playing time. I told the guys it’s a marathon for us this year. It’s not a 100 meter dash. We have to progressively get better and learn each other and look toward the end goal instead of right now.
Early on we did well with our pressure. Then we became tired and they started breaking our pressure and we started turning the ball over. We didn’t get into any type of rhythm. That comes with time and our guys learning the offensive system. The key is we have to learn each other,” said Coach Justin Bryant. Tyler Rose led the Jackets with 10 points including two threes. Devan Hampton followed with eight also with two threes. Trevor Hampton had seven with a three. Dmitri Johnson scored four. Kasey Brown scored three and Boo Goins hit a three. Terrince Bramhall scored two.

The Indians exploded for a 21-3 first quarter and the Jackets could never recover. Grundy battled the rest of the way to make the best they could of it but the slow start was just too much. “We played a really, really bad first quarter. Before the game I talked about emotion. I really believe with these first year players out here on the court you could see some of that emotion in them and they didn’t control it very well. They pressure they were putting on us got us kind of frustrated early. They shot 10 free throws in the first two minutes of the game and it kind of got us behind. What I’m so proud of these not quitting. I talked about it a half time is we play until the final horn and that’s what they did for me.
Trevor Hampton led Grundy with 17 points including a three. Tanner Smartt followed with seven. Terrince Bramhall and Tyler Rose scored six each. Boo Goins notched four. Devan Hampton had three and Kasey Brown scored two.
