Notre Dame came to the mountain Friday and shut out the Yellow Jackets 41-0 in the final regular season game. Grundy was still able to draw a wildcard spot into the playoffs and will travel to Upperman in Baxter Friday for a first round game. Friday’s loss dropped Grundy’s record to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the district.
“Notre Dame is a tough team. We were out-powered and out-manned. They’re a strong team and we knew we were in an uphill battle. Mistake free football the first half would have helped. It really hurt us with the three turnovers. They’re a tough team and it’s hard to play a tough team like that. Our kids battled.
Most importantly our kids had a tough season this year and a tough schedule. They responded well to it. I’m super proud of them and those seniors have done a lot for this program. It’s very emotional for us coaches. I know I’ve been around most of them since fifth grade,” said Coach Nick Bryant.
Notre Dame scored on a three yard run in the first quarter. Their three scores in the second came off a nine yard pass, a 36 yard interception and a 36 yard pass. Their two touchdowns in the third quarter were on 61 and 75 yard runs.
Grundy only threatened to score once in the first half and once in the fourth quarter. Both drives were killed by turnovers.
Houston Mainord led the offense completing nine of 18 passes for 112 yards. Michael Nolan caught two of the passes for 49 yards. Trevor Hampton caught two for 23. Logan Meeks caught two for 22. Dylan Cleek had two for 14 yards.
Michael Nolan led in rushing with 15 carries for 46 yards. Logan Meeks rushed once for 15. Jesse Goodman had 15 on six carries. Dylan Cleek had 13 on three carries. Arthur Roberts gained two yards on a carry and Schylar Burgess had one for one.
Grundy only totaled 156 on offense. This was partly due to 48 yards lost on quarterback sacks. Logan Meeks shined on special teams with four kickoff returns for 126 yards.
Logan Meeks, Dylan Cleek and Terrince Bramhall led Grundy in tackles with four stops each. Tyler Land had three stops and a fumble recovery. Jesse Goodman had a tackle for a loss and a sack in his total of three. Michael Nolan, Chase Meeks, Greg McDaniel, Eldon Posey and Arthur Roberts all had three stops.
The Jackets travel to Baxter in Putnam County to take on the Upperman Bees Friday in the TSSAA’s first round of playoffs. Kickoff for all playoff games is 7:00 local time. The Bees are 10-0 on the season and average 52.3 points per game. They have played no common opponents as Grundy this year. Grundy beat the Bees 21-7 last year and 49-34 in 2011, so that could be some psychological advantage to the Jackets going into the game.
The Jackets will need all the support possible against a very tough Bees team. It’s the playoffs and that should be reason enough to GET OUT TO THE GAME!
