Grundy Health Director receives highest award

Charlene Nunley, director of the Grundy County Health Department, has been honored with the R.H. Hutcheson, Sr., M.D. award from the Tennessee Public Health Association. The award was presented at TPHA’s annual meeting in Franklin in September. The Hutcheson Award is considered the highest award given by TPHA and is named in honor of Dr. R.H. Hutcheson, Sr., who was commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Health for several years. The Hutcheson Award is given to a person in public health who has made outstanding contributions to public health over a period of several years. “Charlene is a strong leader and team player who gives 150 percent to everything she does,” said Glenn Czarnecki, Regional Director for the Southeast Regional Health Office. In addition to being the director of Grundy County Health Department, Charlene also directs the Franklin, Marion, and Sequatchie County Health Departments. In that role, she has overseen the construction of three county health departments and an addition to a fourth county health department. She is always advocating for facility improvements to better serve the public. Charlene is always ready to volunteer for Remote Area Medical Clinics organized by local Health Councils to provide free dental, vision and medical services to those in need. Because Charlene realizes the value of education and awareness, she also assists with health education events such as the Incredible Baby Shower, Mountain Tops and Bottoms and Healthy Horizons. “She is always willing to roll up her sleeves and do whatever it takes to improve the public’s health,” stated Czarnecki. “Charlene is an incredible asset to the public health team and the residents of the four counties she serves.” The Tennessee Public Health Association has more than 1,200 members and is one of the largest affiliates of the American Public Health Association.
