The Yellow Jackets got back into the win column Friday night shutting out the Chattanooga Christian Chargers for a 35-0 homecoming win. It also broke a four game losing streak for the team. Grundy improved to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in District 7AA.
“It was an impressive win for our guys tonight. We came out and just physically dominated them. We ran up and down the field on them. We played a well- rounded game. We’re finally getting everything clicking. We’ve changed our circumstances and come together as a team. It’s really showing in the way these kids are playing; Dominant performance by them. I can’t say enough about how well they played,” said Coach Nick Bryant.
Grundy got on the board for the first time when Schylar Burgess broke loose on a 15 yard run for score with 7:55 on the clock in the first quarter. The extra point kick was blocked but Grundy led 6-0. With just two seconds left in the quarter Houston Mainord hit Dylan Cleek for a 14 yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion pass failed.
Up 12-0 Grundy scored at the 3:01 mark of the second quarter on a one yard Michael Nolan run. Again the Jackets couldn’t convert but they took an 18-0 lead to the half.
Midway through the third quarter the Chargers were pinned deep in their own territory when Eldon Posey tackled the Charger runner in the end zone for a safety and pushed the Jacket lead to 20-0.
Michael Nolan would add 37 and 13 yard touchdown runs, the first at the end of the third quarter and the second with 10:22 left in the game. He ran in the two point conversion on the first and Kevin Stewart kicked for one on the second. Up 35-0 at that point Grundy rode the mercy rule to an early finish and several of the younger players saw action before the final horn.
Nolan had another great rushing night with 140 yards on 18 carries with his three touchdowns. Dylan Cleek followed with 104 on 11 carries. Schylar Burgess picked up 81 on 10 totes with a TD. James McDaniel had 21 yards on four carries. Jesse Goodman had 20 on his four. Nathan Carreto picked up 10 on three.
Houston Mainord had a great night in the air completing eight of 17 passes for 118 yards and a score. Trevor Hampton led the receivers with five catches for 101 yards. Dylan Cleek caught one for 14 yards and a touchdown.
As a team the Jackets rolled up 387 yards of rushing and 118 yards in the air for 505 yards of offense. They notched 25 first downs.
Nolan led the defense with seven solo tackles, four for a loss and three sacks. Terrince Bramhall notched five solos, two for a loss and a sack. Eldon Posey made two solos, an assist, one for a loss as well as the tackle for a safety. Dylan Cleek also had four tackles, broke up a pass and intercepted another. Grundy’s defense held CCS to just 36 total yards. They had 45 in the air but negative nine on the ground.
“Our defense against a passing frenzy attack, held them to zero points. I’m super proud of the way our defense played tonight. We get a good by week. We’ll get them healed. It was a great atmosphere for homecoming. It was a great job by everyone who helped with homecoming. We had a great parade. It was a great night for us. It was impressive,” added Coach Bryant.
The Jackets are off this week. Next week they’ll travel to Bledsoe County for another District 7AA contest. You’ll have to wait until October 18 to GET OUT TO THE GAME!
