To say it was a bad night for the Yellow Jackets would be an understatement in the eyes of most. Grundy fell 49-7 and only scored their lone touchdown with just five seconds left in the game. The Jackets notched seven turnovers in the contest. The loss dropped the Jacket to 1-3 overall and they remain 0-1 in District 7AA.
“You can’t win turning it over. We beat ourselves. It’s a great game early on when it’s 7-0 and we have turnover, after turnover, after turnover. We had seven turnovers. We just have to protect the ball better and execute. The defense played well even though it doesn’t look like it. When you have seven turnovers that’s the difference,” said Coach Nick Bryant after the game.
Silverdale scored on a 39 yard run in the first quarter and a 24 yard pass in the second quarter. They made both PATs and led 14-0 at the half. In the third quarter the scored on a two yard and 34 yard passes. They posted three scores in the fourth on a one yard, a 34 yard and a 35 yard run. They were perfect on the night for extra points going seven for seven.
The Seahawks gained 264 yards on 35 carries. They had 93 yards passing completing six of 11 attempts. Both teams had just 40 yards in penalties on the night.
Grundy’s lone score came with just 5.5 seconds left in the contest when Hogan Holland hit Jesse Goodman on a four yard touchdown pass. Kevin Stewart hit the extra point to make the final 49-7.
Michael Nolan led Grundy in rushing with 18 carries for 105 yards. Dylan Cleek had 26 yards on five carries. Jesse Goodman gained 23 yards the one time he carried it. Levi Jacks picked up 16 on three. The Jacket backs combined for three fumbles. Another fumble was made on a kickoff return.
Hogan Holland went three for five in passing for 51 yards and a TD. Houston Mainord hit seven of 11 for 36 yards. Trevor Hampton completed his only pass for two yards. Dylan Cleek was 0 for 1. The quarterbacks combined for four thrown interceptions.
Trevor Hampton did the most damage receiving with six catches for 67 yards. Logan Meeks caught two for eight. Christian Brown, Jesse Goodman and Houston Mainord all had catches for eight, four and two yards respectively.
Gregory McDaniel led the Jacket defense with seven solo tackles, two for a loss and an interception. Eldon Posey notched three solos, one assist, three for a loss and a sack. Terrince Bramhall had six solos, an assist, one for a loss and broke up a pass. Jesse Goodman made five solos and two assists. Schylar Burgess, Tyler Land and Michael Nolan made five tackles each.
The Jackets travel to #5 state ranked Class 4A Signal Mountain Friday night. The Eagles are a force to be reckoned with again this year at 3-1 with big wins over Tyner, Bledsoe County and Red Bank. Their only loss was in the opener 14-12 to East Hamilton who is 4-0 and ranked #2 in Class 5A.
