Hall Of Fame Inducts Richards And 1998 Girls At Friday Game
The Grundy County High School Sports Hall of Fame committee has named the rest of the inductees for the 2013-14 school year. There will be two more induction nights during football season, three during basketball and one in baseball. This Friday Coach Ricky Richards and the 1998 Lady Yellow Jacket state championship team will become the next two inductees. There will be a total of 10 inducted.
Ricky Richards is the winningest coach in school history and the only coach to take a team to a state title game and to win a state title. Throughout his 25 years at the helm of the Lady Yellow Jacket program he is just as proud of the 21 girls who got college scholarships from his teams.
The 1998 Lady Yellow Jacket basketball team is the only state champions in school history as well. After winning the district tournament the Lady Jackets fell in the region championship and had to go on the road to get to the state tourney. They won that game and won all three in Murfreesboro to take the title with a 41-39 win over Livingston Academy.
That season they were predicted to win it all by the late Duper Ladd before the season even started. Ladd served as an assistant coach on the team as well as athletic director at the school
The other Grundy greats that will be inducted this year will be Hugh Hill and the late Horace Moore at the September 27, game against South Pittsburg. During basketball season over three separate nights Mary Ellen Patton, Tannis Overturf, Joe Malone and the late Holly Brown will be inducted. In baseball season Coach Frank Clay will be the final inductee for this school year.
All those inducted this year will have a vote on next year’s nominees. Only the HOF member themselves can vote and any teams inducted will have one vote as a whole with the team picking a representative to cast that vote.
Nominations will open sometime in the spring with guidelines for the public to submit nominations. The HOF committee will then determine who has met the prescribed criteria and list them on the ballot for the 2014-15 class. Classes will likely be limited to 3-5 per year.
