The best thing to do after an emotional loss is to bounce back with a big win. The Yellow Jackets did just that Friday night downing Grace Baptist Academy 48-14. The win gave Grundy a 1-1 record going into this week’s game at Sequatchie County.

“We had an outstanding game. Our defense was on their keys better and doing what they were supposed to be doing. We made some adjustments and moved some players around and they played well,” said Coach Nick Bryant.

Grundy’s offense played just as big as the first week as well.

“We have so many different weapons on offense. We’re getting touches with many different players. It’s a deadly offensive style when you’re able to do that,” added the coach.

That Jacket offense posted 41 points before allowing Grace to get on the board. Levi Jacks struck pay dirt first for the Jackets on a nine yard run at the 6:37 mark of the first quarter. Kevin Steward added the kick and Grundy led 7-0.

Michael Nolan got the first of his three scores on a 60 yard run with 3:41 left in the quarter. Stewart added the kick again. Dylan Cleek padded the lead with a 10 yard run for score at 11:52 of the second quarter.

Less than two minutes later Trevor Hampton caught a 30 yard pass from Houston Mainord. Stewart kicked again and Grundy took a 28-0 lead to halftime.

In the third quarter at 4:38 Nolan took off on a fake punt and scored from 36 yards out. The kick failed. With 1:53 left in the quarter he scored again from the 30 yard line. Stewart booted the kick and Grundy led 41-0.

Grundy subbed heavily in the final quarter and the teams traded scores as a result. Grace finally got on the board with 2:49 left in the game on a one yard and a PAT. The Jackets scored one more time with 1:39 left when Hogan Holland hit Logan Meeks for a 53 yard touchdown pass. Stewart added the kick going six of seven on the night.

Grace added a meaningless score with 21 seconds left on a 61 yard run. The kick made the final 48-14 Grundy.

Nolan led the offense with 227 yards on 12 runs with three Touchdowns. That and his seven tackles made him the Chattanooga Times Free Press player of the week.

“Michael Nolan played outstanding. He had three touchdowns and over 200 yards. He only touched the ball three or four times in the second half. The line was making the holes and when he would get into the secondary they were literally laying down on the ground to keep from Michael hitting him,” complimented Coach Bryant.

Jesse Goodman rushed for 41 yards on five carries. Dylan Cleek had 28 yards on four carries and a score. Levi Jacks rushed for 26 on six with a score. Grundy as a team rolled up 553 yards on offense.

Houston Mainord completed 11 of 16 for 178 yards and a TD. Hogan Holland got into the act completing two of three for 53 yards and a score.

Trevor Hampton led the receivers with four catches for 73 yards and a TD. Logan Meeks had 67 yards on three receptions and a score. Christian Brown caught two passes for 52 yards. Schylar Burgess had 30 yards on two catches. Dylan Cleek had one for nine.

Defensively Dylan Cleek and Tyler Land had eight tackles each. Alex Nunley notched five. Terrince Bramhall and Logan Meeks had five each. Joe James had four and forced two fumbles. Nathan Carreto, Jesse Goodman, Levi Jacks, Eldon Posey and Chase Nunley all hat three tackles each. Schylar Burgess picked off a pass to go with his two tackles.

Grundy travels to another big rival Sequatchie County Friday night. The Indians are 1-0 after a 40-3 win over Community in zero week. Sequatchie has a few familiar faces on their coaching staff to make things even more interesting in this rivalry game.

“It’s an arch nemesis type game. You know Marion and Sequatchie Counties are always the biggest rivalries. It will be much more now with Coach Colquette coaching them. It’s going to be a fun game Friday night for sure. We match up pretty even so anything could happen. The key will be execution and preventing turnovers. We’ve got seven turnovers in two weeks and we have to correct that,” said Bryant.

It’s the first district game for both teams and oh so important to get that district win. The team will need all of the Yellow Jacket fans to GET OUT TO THE GAME!
