LAYNE, DARRELL, age 61, of Tracy City, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013, from injuries in a logging accident. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, camping, and all that nature had to enjoy. He had worked as a coalminer and logger most of his life. He was preceded in death by his sister, Darla Layne Christian. Survivors include his children, Rocky D. Layne, Carrie A. Frost, Michael L. Wilkinson, and Christy Wilkinson Dykes; parents, Alfred L. and Betty J. Layne; brothers, Ricky (Stephanie) Layne, Johnny Layne, all of Tracy City; sister, Gwen (Don) Smith, Murfreesboro, TN; grandchildren, Brandi Collins, Blake Layne, Megan Frost, Sidnie Dykes, Brayden Frost, Ciera Layne, Dominique Wilkins, Savannah Dykes, and Dontah Wilkinson. Funeral services were held Friday, August 30 in Myers Hill First Congregational Methodist Church with Ministers Dennis Rollins and Mathew Meeks officiating. Burial was in Pryor Ridge Cemetery.  TURNER, MAE, BELL, 83, of Live Oak, Florida passed away Tuesday August 27, 2013. She was born in Gruetli-Laager, Tennessee on February 2, 1930 to John Wesley and Sarah Ellen Dennis King who preceded her in death along with her husband, Glenn Turner; son, David Gerald Turner; daughter, Carmilla Turner; sister, Mathel Caldwell; brothers, Ray, Junior, Fred and Herbert King; granddaughter, Heather Turner; grandson, Justin Turner. She is survived by her daughters, Regina Hernandez and Teresa (Hobert) Wilbanks; sons, James, Eddie, Melvin (Marsha) and Lennie Turner all of Live Oak, Florida; sister, Lillie Bell Johnson, Gruetli-Laager, TN; 7 grandchildren; 16 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 31 in the funeral home chapel. Burial was in Fall Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

HIETT, WILLIAM, EUGENE, 79, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, of Dalton, GA, died Monday, August 26, 2013 at his home. Born March 17, 1934 in Belleville, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Wallace S. Hiett, Sr. and Florence M. Brown Hiett. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama. He served his country as a member of the United States Navy Seabees from January 19, 1955 to January 19, 1957. While stationed in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, he met the former, Marion G. Gregory, whom he married on June 20, 1956, in Nova Scotia. In 1965, he went to work for General Electric Company where he was an electrical engineer in the Ordnance Systems Division for more than thirty years. He continued as a consultant for Lockheed Martin until finally retiring in 2008. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Pittsburg. He was active in multiple sclerosis charity efforts. He was also enthusiastic about genealogy research. At the time of his death, he was writing and compiling a book on family genealogy. He was preceded in death by sister, Lillian Barnhill and two brothers, Wallace S. “Shorty” Hiett, Jr. and Phillip Hiett. Survivors include his wife, Marion; daughter, Bonny Snyder and her husband, Robert of Gig Harbor, Wash; two sons, W. Patrick Hiett and his wife, Young of San Antonio, TX; and Timothy Cecil Hiett and his wife, Margarita of Marblehead, Mass; four grandchildren, Bonny Marie Hiett, Patricia Warden, William Hiett, and Gregory Hiett; and a sister Dorothy Evans of North Fort Myers, FL. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m. at the Coalmont Cemetery with Bro. Ray Winton officiating with military honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard. Local arrangements were made by Layne Funeral Home, Altamont, TN.  

 ANDERSON, OTSIE, JUNE, PARTIN, 75, of Palmer, TN, passed away Monday, September 2, 2013 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Palmer on September 19, 1937 to Benjamin Franklin Partin and Ollie Jackson Cagle Partin who preceded her in death along with her husband Alvin, T. “Tom” Anderson; son, Thomas Wade Anderson; sister, Bessie King; brother, Jack Partin; grandson, Christopher Hargis.  She is survived by her sons, Ricky (Kathy), Charlie (Sandra), and Tony (Buffy) Anderson; daughters, Zenia (James “Duke”) Cox and Marsha (DeWayne) Privett; sister, Imogene  Smith, Lexington, KY; brother, James B. (Marion) Partin, Acworth, GA; 12 grandchildren, Elonia, Nateka, Jennifer, Brandon, Courtney, Brittany, T.J., Zachary, Dillon, Joe, Danielle and Delaney; 15 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 5 in the funeral home chapel with Ministers John Potts, Riley Anderson and Jimmy O’Dear officiating with burial to follow in Brown’s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation is 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 4 at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN. BEAN, ZORA, ELIZABETH, PARKS, age 74, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at her home in the Rutledge Hill Community of Hillsboro surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Pelham, Tennessee to her parents, the late Edgar H. Parks and Nannie Elizabeth Rieder Parks and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Glen Parks, Jonas Parks and Charles Parks. She will be fondly remembered as a loving and wonderful wife and mother and a devoted homemaker. She played piano for over 64 years and was a Charter Member of the Heartfelt Gospel Music Association for 18 years. She was a member of the Payne’s Cove Congregational Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, John William Bean of Hillsboro, TN; son, John Randy Bean of Tullahoma, TN; daughters, Martha Bean Thompson and her husband Larry of Quebeck, TN and Mary E. Bean Shelton and her husband Joey of Hillsboro, TN; sisters, Edna Parks and Emma Jean White both of Bowling Green, KY; brothers, David Parks and wife Betty of Orlando, FL and Frank Parks and wife Shirley of Willoughby, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Kelly Hall (Adam), Sandi Sidlowe (Bobby), William Thompson, Andrew Thompson, Elan Thompson, Erik Shelton and Lora Shelton; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, September 2, from the Chapel of Central Funeral Home with Sister Mary Bean Shelton, Brother James Smith and Brother James Frizzell officiating.  Burial was in Rutledge Hill Community Church Cemetery.  Arrangements were made by Central Funeral Home, Manchester, TN.

BROCK, WALTER, 78, of the Pryor Ridge community near Tracy City, TN, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at his home. He was a retired equipment operator and had worked in the coalmines. A native of Red Bird, Kentucky, he was a son of the late John and Sarah Brock and was preceded in death by a step-son, Tim Keener; grandson, Little Bill Perry; brothers, Wallin Brock and Ralph Brock; sisters, Juanita Gardi and Grace Reynolds. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Brock, Tracy City; children, Carolyn Muncy and Marilyn Barber of Williamsburg, KY; Wesley Walter Brock of Ohio; step children, Tommy and Troy Keener, both of Signal Mountain; Terry Keener of Tracy City; brothers, Carl Brock and J.B. Brock; sister, Joyce Brock; 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, September 1 at Pryor Ridge Church with Ministers Bobby Winton and Jimmy Campbell officiating. Pallbearers were Caleb Layne, Mark Nunley, Jeremy Dykes, Ricky Nunley, Chase Nunley, and Kole Layne. DESMARAIS, RAYMOND, GENE, “SKIP,” age 68, of Tracy City, TN, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 in Emerald Hodgson Skilled Care in Sewanee, TN. He was born in Worchester, MA and was a retired carpenter and mechanic and was preceded in death by a grandson, Skylor Henry. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Burrows Desmarais; children, Gene (LeAnn) Desmarais, Shawn Desmarais, Kelly (Veronica) Desmarais, Devin Desmarais, Tammy Nunley (Chad Henry), Amanda Desmarais; brother, Richard Desmarais; sister, Sandy Sharpe, St. Petersburg, FL; 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 4 in the funeral home chapel with Claude Hoback and Ministers Ray Winton and Barry Nolan officiating. Burial was in Coalmont Cemetery. MEEKS, ROSA, LEE, T., age 92, of the Flat Branch community near Tracy City, TN, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee. She was preceded in death by her husband, France Meeks. Survivors include her children, William Lester (Sandy) Meeks, Donnie (Mary) Thomas, both of Tracy City, Dottie (Billy) Smartt, Gruetli-Laager, and Ruby (James Hobbs) of Altamont; brothers, Roy Kilgore, Alabama and Robert Kilgore, McMinnville; sister, Linda Lawson, McMinnville; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Sunday, September 1 at Coalmont Cemetery with Minister Albert “Pap” Nunley officiating.
