Grundy’s gridiron guys begin the 2013 campaign Friday night for real when they host the Marion County Warriors at Crisp Field with kickoff set for 7:00 pm. With the Warriors being the Jackets’ biggest rival Friday’s game should set the tone for the season for Coach Nick Bryant’s team.
“We’re pretty well prepared for them. We’ve been going over them for three or four weeks. Now we just have to execute it and get everything down to the T now. It relies on our players filling the holes. Baby they’re ready to go. We just need to make sure we get that going. We’ll have to figure out if their number one back Zeman is really going to be out,” said Bryant.
The Jackets hosted the annual Sequatchie Valley Jamboree and saw one of the biggest crowds ever on the mountain.
“We appreciate everyone that helped with the jamboree, all the parents and the fans. It went over excellent. We had a great crowd. It was great weather. It’s been a terrific experience for us. I’m proud we got to host the jamboree again,” said the coach.
Grundy defeated Whitwell 13-7 in their first quarter of action. Michael Nolan scored on a 35 yard touchdown run and Dylan Cleek scored from the 50. Kevin Stewart booted the extra point. Terrince Bramhall notched a quarterback sack as well.
“We were able to keep them off balance running and throwing. That’s the thing we have to do is keep it 50-50 and keep them guessing. That’s what happened to Whitwell they didn’t know what was coming. We kept them off balance and were able to get the big runs on them. We have to put the extra points through though. We can’t get beat by one point. The kicks are crucial,” said Bryant.
In their second quarter of the jamboree Grundy fell 7-6 to Chattanooga Christian. The Jackets played a lot of their younger players in this quarter. Some of that youth made themselves known as Hogan Holland threw a 37 yard pass to Trevor Hampton for touchdown.
“The younger guys looked good for their first time to be under the lights for a lot of those freshmen. We looked a whole lot better tonight in both quarters. We’ve been sloppy in our scrimmages. I think we’ve finally got some things clicking. Now we’ve got to get ready for Marion,” said Coach Bryant.
Get ready for Marion indeed. It’s that time Grundy fans. It’s the real deal on Friday. It counts in the record books. It matters. Will you be there to cheer on your Yellow Jackets? Will you be the 12th man and help lift the Jackets to victory? You know you should. You know you better GET OUT TO THE GAME!
