Sequatchie Valley Jamboree Friday At GCHS

Grundy County High School and Crisp Field will play hosts Friday to the annual Sequatchie Valley Jamboree one of the oldest in the state. Eight teams will face off in two quarters each of scrimmage action to get the 2013 season underway. Coach Nick Bryant is just looking to do the little things right Friday.

“The jamboree is the jamboree. Some years you go out there and try to intimidate teams and try to score as many as you can. Some years you’ll come out and not even play the starters. I’ll be honest we’ve talked about it both ways this year. We’re still unsure of how we’re going to play it. We’ll just enjoy it. The main thing will be to get plays run in on time, have 11 on the field, subs, don’t make simple mistakes and just do the simple things without mistakes. That’s the biggest thing for us to work out in the jamboree,” said Bryant at the Kickoff Dinner Monday night.

The coach has big numbers out this season with 56 players on the roster. They dressed 54 at the Whitwell scrimmage last week. He expects to pick up some more when school starts August 26 with some freshmen that played for the Junior Jackets last year.

“This is the most I’ve ever had out and one of the higher numbers for Grundy. I’m very pleased with the numbers this year,” said the coach.

He wasn’t so pleased with last week’s scrimmage in other areas.

“We didn’t do so well last week against Whitwell. The score was 2-2 but overall I was disappointed in our lack of execution and timing. Defensively we were pretty solid. We gave up a big play here and there but overall I was disappointed in a lack of execution on our part,” said Bryant.

They scrimmaged Tuesday at Coffee County after press deadlines. “We’re looking to do better tomorrow night against Coffee County. We want to try and get the kinks worked out and get everything rolling. I know scrimmages are not the best look especially doing the 10 plays each way deal. It still gives us a little base, something to go by, something to get rolling and try to get everything worked out before jamboree and definitely before Marion,” added the coach.

Starting the season with your top rival is of course big for any team. It doesn’t get any bigger for Grundy than facing off against Marion County.

“It’s definitely big. There will be a lot of emotions flying with it being Marion the first game. We just have to try to settle down and play with them. They’re talking their selves up big and saying things like state champions and at least fourth round of the playoffs. They can make a good run, especially in 2A ball with whom they play. We can’t worry about all the hype and all talk about Blake Zeman, we just have to come out and play our football. We can’t let them ground and pound us the whole game. We have to stand our ground and make sure we put points up on the board. They’re going to want to put up the points quickly,” said Bryant.

That game will have to wait one more week as teams get the Jamboree out of the way. Saturday Grundy will also play host to the JV Jamboree for old SVC schools starting at 4:00 p.m. Grundy, Marion, South Pittsburg, Whitwell, Sequatchie and Bledsoe will all see two quarters of action with their younger players.

Bryant also wanted to thank the Quarterback Club for all their hard work so far this season.

“I want to thank this great crowd at the kickoff dinner and all the work the Quarterback Club is doing like the cleanup day they held Saturday. We couldn’t do all of this without help and support like this,” complimented the coach.

So it’s Jamboree time Yellow Jacket fans. Friday starts the boys of fall on their paths to the glory they hope to achieve. You know what to do – GET OUT TO THE GAME!
